Default Question: Trailering a untaxed car with a dolly?

As dolly's only lift the front wheels of a car off the road would it sill be ok to trailer an untaxed car with one?

Just thinking seeing as an untaxed car can't be on the road, does that still apply if wheels are still on the road during trailering?

Im not a 100% on this i would recomend checking with the dvla because my company cannot move untaxed vehicles without using an Operators licence and tacho but it may be different for you as your not a business or moving it for gain i.e money

quite correct if you are not moving it for gain (money) then it can go anywhere as it is classed as a trailor....however, if you get stopped by the plod and the car your dollying is on a SORN which i guess it would be, they can remove the sorn because its on the road..... you then have to re-sorn it to stop the fine, it a nitemare.....i have a mate who works for the dvla and just rang and asked....lol

if its on the road, it has to be taxed simple as , i.e you park two wheels on your drive, but two on the road, it has to be taxed, if its seen on the road, wether behind another vehice it is still liable for exise duty,
you need to deal with the traffic wardens, as they are the bastards who book you without giving a shit.

If its being towed with 2 wheels off the ground and has no driver it is classed as a trailer. It needs to be displaying the reg mark of the vehicle towing it.

If the loading and unloading does not involve a public road then NO tax (or insurance) is necessary.

We have been through this with so many members in the motorclub and that was the official word from the MSA when they got involved.

I was told this by traffic cops in Lancashire when brining my turbo up the road. I was towing on a fixed bar with 4 wheels on the road . It had to be road legal for me to do this unless I used a towing dolly

Fixed bars, tow ropes, or 4 wheels on the ground (driver or not) and it does need to be taxed.

Thats where people often get confused apparently.

You ever used a dolly though? What a pain in the arse!

Especially if the car doesnt run, you try getting the bastard thing off.

Once had to go rescue a mate who had a blowout on a dolly with a dead Rover214 on it. at the side of the road, we had to get a tow rope and drag the dead car off the dolly, even then I pulled the Rover, the dolly and the Freelander it was hitched to - up the road 25 yards......

With a 1.4 Corsa!

If you have the space to store it - get a trailer!
