Default What would you do ?

My S1 has never had any paint but the front spoiler is starting to become a different colour to the towing eye cover and is really noticable in a certain light. Years of polishing me thinks and proves it has never had paint. You can just about see it on this pic. . .

Thing is, it does spoil the look of the car sometimes and the bumper and the corner pieces have started to form hairline cracks in the paint too. S1's do look the mutts nuts when the front end is mint. So what do i do. Get the front end done and have it looking totally mint but not with original paint anymore or leave it as an original example

To be fair mate, if its come this far, like 20 years without ever having been touched, thats done fucking well.

Obviously its a hard choice, BUT, the way i see it, if i walked up to it in a car show, and saw what you described as the towing eye cover being a different colour to the valance, my first reaction would be, "oh dear look at that poor colour match, its obviously had some spray work in its past"

You know its original......but i doubt many people would see it that way.

I'm not 100% but im sure all the bits for the bumpers are sprayed seperately then put together.....? Cracking would suggest they have been re-sprayed without being taken apart?

And the other problem you have, the whole car is going to of faded over time, you can guarantee the bits you have sprayed will look far superior to the rest of the car then?

Maybe a whole re-spray?

dry, hate to piss on your fire mate, but i have a feeling that it will of had
paint some where along the line, especially the rear arches of the bodykit
to get rid of stone chips, i would honestly say give it a full lick, not many
s1's out there that aint had paint, you wont regret it

It's the valance mate. It is turning a pale blue colour.

Andy. I am the 3rd owner and the 2nd owner had known the car all it's life as his mate had it 16 years from new and he took his mate to pick it up from Ford. He said it has never had any major paintwork done just touch ups on stone chips etc. Paintwise, the rest of the car is spot on. It's just the front valance and seems a shame to spray the whole car and lose it's originality just because of this.

Are people interested if a S1 is still original or is it a case of the better looking it is the better the car is ? Even if has been restored.

yes, the reason why i said that was my car did 8k on a respray and the rear arches where bad ly stone chipped,

find a suitable bodyshop and get a full re spray, thats my advice,

new paint looks nice, easier to polish and is not an issue of the originality
of the car, you have to remember that it is 20 years old

thats my opinion pal

As you see from the likes of eBay and so on a mint S1 restored or not fetches good money. Personally in my eyes a car that has had major restoration work (like cutting of major panels and being welded back up) shouldnt be worth anything near that of an original car, for obvious reasons, but the way it seems to be is as long as there is no rot they fetch the money.

As AJC and i previously said, for a 20 year old car the paints done very well especially seeing as it gets used and doesnt sit in the garage never to see the light of day. I personally think a re-spray but obviously you are going to pay good money for it, but it can only be a good thing, in terms of appearance and also helping to keep rust at bay

get a full re spray i would you will never match the paint now as its to old if you had the front end re sprayed it would make the rest of the car look bad because the front would look 100% and because the other paint is 20 years old it will make it look

mate its called oxidation, and paint pigment degradation,it happens to everything, even plastics degrade slowley due to ultra violet light breaking down paint pigment and plastic molecules in pvc/upvc,s and polymers.

getting these items re-coated will enhance and prolong the life of your plastics(bearing in mind the plastic oils that run through the plastic panels have probably been drying out since they where made) ,pluss the paint for plastics and polymer based items will eat into the first microns of surface area on your parts, giving back the flexibility and retaining some stregnth in these items, filling in the hair-line cracks at the same time, so getting them coated really is paramount, unless you can replace them with new (stored in a dark warehouse ) parts ,this is your real world option, if you have photo proof of before and after paint shots of the car, then most people would rather purchase a genuine ,freshly painted clean looking motor, than have to set aside some dosh to do it themselves, pluss you get to own a new looking motor again. and you could up your valuation for insurance, showing a perfect paint finish. just dont get "joey the gun" to finish your car for you!

cheeRS for the input guys. Think i will get someone reputable to do the front valance as close as they can to the colour the car is now and see what it looks like. The side bits that come round to the front off the front arches seem to be the same colour as the rest of the car, it's just the valance. It should'nt cost that much and worth a shot before a full respray. Got a baby on the way in July so my missus won't be too happy about spending loads of dosh at the moment. Like people say, a mint S1 is a mint S1, original paint or not. The panels would still be original even if was resprayed.

Take it to Peter @ Moorland Service Station in Kirby-in-Furness to look at.

I think he'll give you an honest opinion of what to do and he'll do an ace job!

Okay here's my input, i am very picky when it comes to how original S1's are although im not biased. If i had to have a panel on my S1 painted, it would piss me off to say the least because my paint for 21 years old is like new and polished beautifully. But.... if i did have any fading or stone chips i would have it painted but i would be paying high money for a 100% job. I would be happy seeing it look right again nice and fresh.

I personally would have it painted Dry... faded toe hook covers and chips to the valance make the car look tired. Plus if you ever go to sell it, you aint gonna get good money for it if the paint is tired. As long as you know ya panels are original i wouldn't worry. If it were me id have it done but shop around first and get a few opinions and find out what quality of paint is gonna be used etc.

id just have the valance done mate if your looking for someone to do it and dont mind a little travelling my brother will sort it for you you have seen the work he has done on my series 1 and im sure you looked at the other series 1 we restored

as for value yes id like to go and pay 7-8k for a original car but those stone chips and the other little bits that come with an original car would piss me right off it all depends on how you like the car id rather it be totally mint

errrrrrrr,i am a panel beater and work for volvo so know what i am talking about, and he says its just the front spoiler.Theres a few shades for diamond white so its just a case of doing a few sprayout cards and offering them up to the car to check the match.Crazy just spaying a full car when its just the front spoiler that he wants doing now.

If you can match that colour exactly and make it look like the rest of the paint then fairplay

But that is NOT an easy task

Been polishing the car in every nook and cranny ready for Sunday's Cumbria show and i've noticed that the car has had a at least a partial if not full respray at some point in it's life Had to look fookin hard to spot it though I don't think the front was done though so it might not be that hard to match as paint which is 20 year old.

If you are at Cumbria i will have a look.

If the car is highly polished its not a bad idea to have some fresh paint as too much polishing can wear thin on seams and joins exposing them to rust starting. So a new coat will cover them. If your aving it painted see if you can save the stickers from coming off.

My thoughts exactly, except for the stickers.....a classic for making the paint start to flake and chip not very far down the line

Yeah thats what i meant I see your point though if the stickers are original. I can't imagine a high quality spray shop masking off stickers to be honest though because its usually a everything off scenario when you're paying good money

Thats the same as i had, complete set in the boxes. After they sold and sat there and thought if they just sold for that what are they worth in years to come. Still too late now

I have to admit i was tempted to keep hold of mine even though i dont have a Series 1, but then i hold onto a lot of stuff on a "what if" basis and have so much stuff, slowly letting it all go.

If he decides to go for the full respray there are some excellent pattern ones around, ive heard good things about them

Sounds a bit wierd!

Just thought i'd mention him as he is doing some work on my S2 and he seems quite good to deal with and understand that enthusiasts want a class job doing, whereas other people i've dealt with just seem to want to get paint on the car and then ask you for the money!

I'm sure he is is a nice guy. His missus was lookin at kitchens at the time so he was probably makin sure she was'nt spending all his money

cheeRS for the input on this guys. Gonna see if getting the whole front done would show up like sore thumb or not. Like i say, the paint is'nt 20 years old like i thought and does look whiter than white. Will get some advice off quality bodyshops and see what they say
