Default Come on then - ERST roof repair.....

With all the talk in here of rusty roof's and people saying that other people have done them/had them done, I would love to see pics of a repair being carried out on one of these. Anyone got any??!!

How can it be effectively done? Remembering that when they rot, it isn't just the outer skin that rots, it is normally the rear corners too.

hi mate i got a rough price from the estimator at my work and said you would be looking at anything up to 1k for a new roof

as said just sanding down and painting the rust will cum back so the only real way to get rid is a new roof

I've done a few of these a fewyears ago on mk2 rs 2000's and a 3dr look a like ...followed the same method as that s2 in the link...

we used good second roofs cut off at a scrapyard and spent most of one day cutting and drilling the weld and pillars off to be left with just a roof skin before cutting off the roof skins off the mk2's ...we done this on a mk2 that had a pop up sunroof in that we wanted rid of ...the 3dr one was a clart cos we had to run the drain chanels down inside the pillars ...

gently run the grinder down the front pillars (as photos on the link) till you see the brazing (that's your cut mark)then drill out the spot weld along the sides(gutters) and inside the front and rear screen or tailgate area....

to be honest it took longer to seperate the skin from the old pillars on the donor roof and prep the skin for fitting than what it did to put the new roof on ...

Mine was only slight though dan, no rot anywhere in the sun roof itself, just some rust bubbles infront of it. Its filled with wax oil now

To be fair that repair in that thread looks like the proper jobby to me........very well done.

I agree if you have rot you need to rip the whole panel off, u can never grind it all out theres always a bit thats still there to continue spreading.

That link looks good, I guess the hardest part is finding a good donor roof. It would be a shame to go to that extent of work for anything that isn't perfect.

Thats a good point i did think that aswell. Theres quite a range of cars though to choose from, doesn't have to be just an RS roof for a change
