where the shaft actually goes into the CV joint, there will be a circlip to let you pull the shaft out. You'll have to really clean out the grease before you can see it.

ok i got the actual joint off. but now there is the 3 legs that the balls go in and its attached to the shaft.
the small part of the gaiter is never going to get over that.
does thats crew onto the shaft?

i ask as there is a slight bulge about an inch down the shaft. but i dont want to wack the shaft in a vice and a bar between the legs and just go for it incase they are not ment to un screw from each other.

i'll try and get some pictures up to explain better.

i didnt want to take the other side apart and tbh i dont think i could easily as it looks rather different to most cv joints ive seen.
it feels like there is some kind of spring in there.

AFAIK, you cannot get that joint off the end.

What you need is a 'Stretchy gaitor' and a special tool to 'dilate' the gaitor and allow it to pass over the joint.

You can get the stretchy gaitors from a motor factor and the tool, I imagine, from Halfords or somewhere similar.

are you talking about the shaft with a metal canister/rubber gaitor on the inner end?if yes then you are supposed to remove the inner gaitor first.tripod bearing is on a circlip.then replace the outer cv gaitor.

just what i did in the end.
popped down to a mate who has a garage down the road.
he tried to stretch the gaiter i had bought but it wouldnt go far enough.

he gave me a kit that he had on the shelf and put it on my shaft for me.
its a great little tool he had, just plug it into the air line and it opens right up.

only charged me 4 quid for the gaiter, metal clips for it and the grease.

all sorted now. ready for the mot tomorrow.

cheers guys!
