if on the road have to have a line through them i.e black insulation tape but i wouldnt have thought you would ever get in trouble if you didnt do it imo my dad drove his capri race car to circuits for 9 years with the numbers and never got stopped, i only know about the line as my dad asked the question with the relevant authority

They couldn't do you for it. In fact I wouldn't say it was that frowned upon any more.
It's just the whole 'racing on the road' image it could project.

Plenty of bikes/scooters leave the manufacturers with there WSB/MotoGP riders numbers on the replica paint jobs
