Just got the linksys WRT54G broadband router and tried setting it up..

When I run through th setup it tried connecting to the network with it connected by cables..

The problem seems to be that there is an adaptor at the NTL box end, then the other end has an RJ45 to USB adaptor.

The system can't connect to the internet, but is getting activity from the router.

Any ideas?

 

i setup an NTL network the other week using a router had no joy!

had to use the main comp as a server using the adaptor thing and then network everything to the server, junked the router and just got wireless cards

bit of an arse NTL

 

grrr damn... people told me to do it this way as we cant have a PC on all the time as mates parents would go mad...

need to find a way round somehow

TBH i dont know mate, but i aint 100% on the networking, im more the line side what with dealing with em all day, it can be done but i think a specialised router is needed.

some1 will probly no more than me, but after my experience if some asks me to do it again ill politely refuse i think

 

Do you run a modem, or is your connection through a set top box? I run a wireless/cabled router on NTL with zero problems.

My setup is cable to modem, modem to router via RJ45, router to pc via RJ45 & other PC's via wireless.

I cannot figure out how to set the network cable itself up.. one end has an adaptor which i suspect changed it from RJ45 to a crossover cable and then the other end from RJ45 to USB via another socket.

It is network from set top box direct to a pc normally, but now want a wireless network

 

bill no modem on this setup, more like a direct link to a server than a connection if ya get me

cud always speak to ntl about getting the other connection

i know my ex's bro had a modem on his

 

I think i may just need a crossover cable... not sure... seems odd

bugger, ntl has taken the site down...it was really usefull, had a forum where you could ask ntl engineers how to get round problems

are you using the rj45 connections on the router? and did u have it running usb previosly?

This was running to a usb connector at the pc end... had the RJ45 to the usb adaptor.

do u guys use the existing cable supplied by NTL or a crossover cable?

 

i think what the problem maybe is the mac address, a few months ago i tried to change my system setup( 2 pc's on a crossover cable with one as the internet connection computer using the USB plug) i found the usb to be a bit slow if the pc was busy, so i wanted to change it to RJ45.... well what a pain in the arse, check and see if your modem has a reset button on it, if it has press it and it will reset the mac address, if not you will need to turn it off for a hours and it will reset itself

the ntlhell world site has a new forum and some of the old posts on this are gone as the site was full of them, ask some people on there

 

we have had the cable connected to a few computers in the house directly... would this still be an issue regarding Mac address as im sure they would all be different... or doesn't the USB have amac address?

 

from what i recall, ( this was last year now that i think about it) the mac address needs to change or be reset if you go from USB to RJ45, i have never used a router so i couldnt comment on how that would work, unplug the modem overnight and try it tommorow if it doesnt have a reset button, honestly its best to ask nthellworld....im still running on usb

 

Think I have sussed this out...

connected the hub to the STB with a straight RJ45.

Connected the hub to the lapto with straight cable.

reset the stb and when trying to access the internet it asks for the user PID and password,

This kinda means its getting through past the router now..

just gotta find there PID and password again.
