Default First ride on the R1!!!!

It was sorta damp...dry in places...riding position very good compared to the 916....more comfortable!..Anyway poodling along around 3/4k revs opening her up to like 6/7k...kinda riding it like the 916...i thought certainly not as quick ....UNTIL i found a dry bit of road...went round the roundabout into first and wack....fuck me it went then it hit a certain rpm and fuck me i needed razor sharp reactions as the front lifted so quickly ,shut off and shook my head...i had just nearly flipped it ...so i thought lets hold it flat in second from about 4k revs...hmm not bad not as quick as the duke...then it literally took off i cannot say what rpm but i made the commmon sense to force myself over the tank as i thought maybe the front wheel lift...obviously not as quick...and i was right too...the steering was very light but it stayed planted...changed to third looked at speedo 107mph at the end of 2nd I then poddled home muttering in my helmet fucking death machine crazy shit fuck me etc etc I dread to think what 3rd is gonna be like...as you are already in the being banned zone at the end of 2nd gear

NUTTER bike...they told me the R6 will try to kill you the R1 WILL kill you

m8's got a 04 model the thing does 102 in 1st gear and has shown 190+ on the clock! wheelies for fun in near every gear!

sadly the wheelies have taken their toll as IT'S back at the mc shop with a spun big shell and awaiting to see if Yamaha WILL foot the bill under warranty

Revving upto 7k? I would imagine its once you get over that it comes alive,i'm sure my mates revs close to 13k Does yours shake its head on power as if its trying to start an almighty tank slapper? My mates had his back and forth the the shop to try and get it sorted as it scares him too much

The 2000 model is alot better than the 98/99...so not yet felt the need although an ohlins damper will be fitted for looks and just in case LOL.

Yes after 7k revs it certainly DOES come alive..its near to ducati 916 quick below it though

I am looking at getting a bike for the summer, and I am torn between a 996 ( my dream bike, just fucking awsome looks and noise) or a gixxer 1000. Was the 916 really that bad phil?

Try a zx10r, they do over 100mph in 1st gear! They are proper crazy! Could have mine off the top speed limiter (180mph) in 5th gear.

Had a couple of old R1's they are smart little bikes. The new thousands make them feel heavy and slow which is a strange thing to comprehend when you're nailing an old R1. But My zx10r seemed to pull harder the faster you went. R1 seemed to struggle (if you can call it that) over 150, 10r just pulls it's speed limiter in higher gears like it's in 3rd.

As daft as that sounds it is true, after a good summers riding you will get very used to it and want more speed/power.......

I love mine though, and if it does shake it's head you haven't set the suspension up correctly. I was once told by a pro that a steering damper is just hiding a fault in your setup. I spent about 3 days constantly adjusting my bike and I can HONESTLY say it doesn't shake it's head even on really rough roads. I also find though that by just lofting the front wheel in the air, there is less chance of a tank slapper anyway

my Ducati 996 S goes up to 95~100 mph in 1st gear Phil (that's 150 km/h, that's it ? )... and it's standard... i imagine a 4 cylinder bike which goes a lot further in RPMs can do far better at the end of 2nd gear than 106 mph

Tested that have you???????? I have seen Dyno's of a Micron high level and Yoshi non high level, both just slip-ons, and there was NO difference(2003 injection model). I have also tried an R1 with full system and I am sorry to say, on road riding, I prefer it with the EXUP in place......

Pet i think its 112mph in second...i hadnt even hit the limiter

Wil...the 916 is awesome to ride but very uncomfortable unless doin over 50mph...the torque is well good BUT i rode the R1 like a duke and nearly flipped it..LOL...the R1 feels similar power to the Duke until you hit the power band but then we are comparing a 210kilo bike with 120bhp to a 173kilo bike with 150bhp!

Get the duke if you can put up with the riding position
