Default Best Fun/Work car for £8000 max?

Okay then guys n gals, what do you reckon's the best car that I can get for up to £8k which is both fun, quick, and also I can use to commute 120 miles a day, so it's gotta be comfy, reliable and not too ridiculous on juice.
What do we reckon? Any pics would be good too.

Had an older 3 series BM before and it cost me a fortune in spares and insurance due to the mileage I do, so would prefer a non-BMW, although I do see your reasoning there, and it does fit the criteria.

Mondeo 2.0 TDCI? shocked the hell out of me when I drove one. Really struggled to fault it. Excellent handling, good on long trips, good on fuel, pretty quick, cruises happily at 90, doesn't look horrible, etc etc..

TOTALLY TOTALLY agree

my mate has one

air con, zenons, all the toys
very comfortable
handles like a go kart
built like a tank
parts and servicing is dead cheap

and the best bit

with a simple re-map = 190bhp and well over 300ft/lbs of torque

embarrasses gti's and on long cruising journeys can return up to 60mpg, and if you spank it to within an inch of its life it still returns over 40 mpg.

wicked car

Audi

I find the steering on th eA4 feels a little isolated but you get used to it and can soon be lobbing it about And it carries a certain air of class about it
