Would it not be better to define a super car by its ability as a percentile?

The problem is that supercars of yesteryear are not that fast by todays standard, though are unquestionably still supercars!

I suggest that a supercar is one that achieves performance within the top 5% of cars being produced at the date of production. This neatly includes all of the past greats, as well as modern crazies!

Does this make sense to anyone but me?

M8, I understood this to be solely down to Engine restrictor. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Someone on TV was on about this ages ago... something along along the lines of :

A supercar is defined as one with no consideration for practical (liveable-with) ability in the design, just designed to be as performance-oriented as possible, think they were on about the F1.

Sure it was old Top Gear, I can 'see' the guy saying it No idea who it was though!

Do you have the figures,for 0-60 and 0-120,then ?? As I recall,the M5 was 0.1 sec different to the Carlton,but I can't remember which way!

As for top speed,it's all down to the gearing ----if you run out of revs, you won't go any faster,no matter how much power you have !!
I seem to remember that the modded Carltons were capable of 185/190 mph. Plus, the Carlton had a 3.6 ltr engine, whilst the M5 has a 5 ltr engine.

I have heard that the BMW M5 is capable of topping 190MPH easily without limiter. Remember, it has about 500BHP out of the crate!

They used it for the Blind speed record (which was a very dull thing to watch on a TV show, cant remember which one)

That said, I once had a run in with a Lotus Carlton in Bristol. I will never forget it, the guy had painted it RED (yuk!). I remember sitting beside him at lights claiming to my mate that it wasnt real cos they never made them that colour, and then proceeded to have my arse handed to me by him!! DOH!

Stunningly quick car, but couldnt go round bends!

Evo tested it round a bowl (millbrook) in this current issue, it stopped at 161mph on the limiter, with sixth and seventh (did I read that right) gear to go

the carlton is geared for 305mph if it was able to hit the limiter in 6th, so it's not as if it's slow

but they did an upgrade that boosted it to 550bhp, i'll find the issue of fast car that it's in to give out some figures for in gear acceleration times, but to be honest, a car that can do 56 mph in first is going to spank it away from the lights once it's up and running

To me a supercar is project that's built out of passion, where all the engineers have pushed themselves to produce something they all really want.

Speed is an issue but I think thrills count more, cars like the Radical, Atom and M12 have to be aknowledged, perhaps not as supercars, but something close. Something where the intial concept hasn't been compromised to please a wider audience.

a supercar is something you have posters of in young boys bedrooms, simple
then you have hypercars which are the next level up, stuff that does 0-100 in the 6's and 200mph+

it's all on top gear somewehre

I would have to say that the fact that the BMW does it without turbos make it all the more impressive!

I was at the nurburgring late last year watching Sabine in the new shape M5 giving it plenty. You wouldn't get even slightly close to her in a Carlton, tuned or otherwise!

Don't get me wrong, I love the Carlton, but the new BMW M5 has evolved into something that the Carlton simply couldnt live with at any time!

A supercar is a very fast car built by people who have a passion for cars and want to make a desireble fast, car not an organisation what wants to make money.
