Default How close would you expect an off the shelf chip to be??

I rigged up my LM-1 on a mates cossie the other night only to find it running very rich (8.5:1 afr mostly on boost).

He recently had it setup with an off the shelf chip from a fairly well known tuning company and hasn't changed anything since.

I understand that an off the shelf chip will be set on the safe side so as to cater for the slight variations in specification on different cars but would you expect them to set it soooo rich?

I haven't had much experience of off the shelf chips for cossies so i thought i had better ask?

Stu or Karl, if you knew the spec of a car, how close would you expect to get to optimum fuelling from a chip with out live mapping?

i had an off the shelf chip from Stu, and apart from the known problem i had past 5500rpm, the AFR was 11.5 on boost til then

Even with an off the shelf chip, the setup should have sorted the fuelling much better than that

8.5:1 is madness. I am surprised it burns it ok to be honest and would expect missfires galore.

The car was run on a rr and their wideband showed it running very rich. We double checked with my wideband in the evening and it showed the same results.

So two independant tests showed the same results.

When i went out in it the car didn't feel as urgent as i would have expected.

When the owner contacted the tuner he gave a speel about settining up on the rich side as expected, and that the only way he could really change it is with a live map at a cost of another Ł????.

Would you:

A: Go back and ask him to sort his chip out free of charge

B: Go for the live map and ask him to knock the cost of the chip and the setup of the price of it.

C: Just shell out for the live map.

D: Ask for you money back for the chip and setup and take your business elsewhere?

We could probably get an improvement on the fueling all the way across the range by knocing back the fuel pressure but the car owner is running stock pressure and a set of greys and i am reluctant to do this as i am un sure of the effects on atomisation/spray pattern??

Greys, say no more. 95% of off the shelf greys chips i see are like this, not to mention the 7.2:1 old Cosworth spark map that drives like crap at bottom end

Thats the problem, they are actually quite a well respected tuner with motorsport pedigree.

Thats why at first i thought the RRs wideband sensor may be telling porkies and double checked it with mine!

I was sure they wouldn't have let it go out the door running like that, but apparently they did??? The setup/chip was only done 3 days before the RR day.

Are you confident the rest of the system is ok though?

Cam timing, air and water sensors, etc etc...

It is not my car so i cannot guarentee these things, however surely the tuner should have noted any probs when working on the car and made the owner aware.

The owner has since contacted the tuner to find out why its is running mostly 8.5:afr on boost. The tuner did not dispute that it was running that rich but said that it was set up like that to be mega safe!!!

Gareth, you are right. It just about managed to measure 8.5:1 and then went into sensor error mode "too rich".

And yes it is Matts car.
