Should my mk6 (1996 built) RS 2000 have the small plastic vin plate on the dash? I think its been broken off at some stage as i found the corner of it under the carpet. How can i go about getting a new one made?

RS NUTTER - first off, does the dash have two holes in it, on the passenger side, about 3inches apart? Secondly, does the windscreen have a cut out in the black obscuration band at the bottom on the passenger side? If you can answer yes to both, then yes your car is probably missing it's VIN....
Not all Escorts of that age had VINs tho.. I do those screens all the time and sometimes you get the early ones with em, sometimes without em, then later ones with em, and sometimes without.... Seems quite random really....
Damo - Not that I have ever done it (seriously, never have, cos I ain't a shit fitter) but I do know that some fitters in the automotive glazing industry have been known to cut the vins off by mistake when using the wire removal tool, and most of the time they don't tell anyone so as not to have to pay out £xx to have it fixed.... You would have thought tho that is this was the case, the fitter might have beem smart enough to fill in the VIN gap in the the screen with the black primer we use for the glue. (When we have screens with VIN gaps o nthe screen and no VIN on the car we blank it with primer and you would never tell by looking at it from the outside)

When i got the car, the vin was missing and had been for time my friend owned it before me, so thats a good few years. The windscreen had the vin plate cutout if you looked carefully, but it seemed to be blanked out? The Vin plate sits in a different place from the Esc Cos on on the RS 2000, its way down behind the screen, which makes it very hard to see which way it was fixed - ie glued or popped in. I assume mine should have the plate as i found a section of it in the car, but it now looks like i require a new windscreen as well as the plate?

Yeah, from what I remember (been a LONG time since I did an Escos screen) the VIN on the EsCos sits on top of dash, above the black band along the bottom of the screen...
If you get a new VIN, you will need a new screen if your cut out has been blanked over... If you get someone who is a really good fitter, you can remove the screen intact, and clean off the blanked over section on the glass, tho this depend how long it has been like this, as after a certain amount of time the primer becomes impervious to pretty much ALL known substances!
