all depends what type as well , especially pad material , but generally old discs and new pads are worn in fairly quick.
new discs+pads take a bit longer i would say 100 miles at least before you start to properly heat them up.

As you say. old discs with new pads, these will " bed in " within 20 miles. New disks + pads, allow 50 - 100 miles, gentle braking if possible, too much heavy and harsh braking can lead to discs overheating and warping.
