urgent views wanted please
right , i am in a job i hate ok. What is it i hear you say.?
Retail store manager. why? Because i manage a 10500 sq ft store BUT i am on my own due to no asistant manager and no supervisor
I have to do cages of stock, manage tills (yes 2 staff to cover tills with £40k turnover on a staurday and i have to face customers thinking icant manage a store)
I cant recruit as the store i inherited was overspent on wages and underperforming on sales,.
i get no time for a break, i start at 7am finish at 6:30pm, with an hours travel either way. i have no support by my area manager and wont suplly cover for me
I have had a successful 8 years at my last job prior to this one.
I am due back into work tomorrow and i dont want to go. Today and yesterday was my first day off in 11 days afer like 55 hour weeks which i dont get paid for.
i today have been in birmingham, for a interview for recruitment agency and the bird there has said if i dont go back then technically its harder for me to get employment
my question i guess is the fact i see less of my kids now, so would you go back in tomorrow or tell em to shove it?
i am so tired, i dont eat as much etc
what do i do
bear in mind i have a mortgage to pay

But if you are earning £50000 where's the problem.
If you aren't you shouldn't be there.
You should go in and hand in your notice and work more reasonable hours until you finish.
Have you discussed your problems with the Area Manager?
Does your contract state minimum hours to be worked?
how long have you worked there?

id tell them to shove it with a possible back up plan. If they need you badly???, which by the sounds of things they do they'll sort the mess out for you. Dont trading standards have something to say about this aswell??
Anyways remember your kids are only young once so dont do anything youll regret

This is what I would do. I would speak to the area manager and tell him you've had enough and you expect some changes or you will think about quitting. See how he takes this. If he doesn't help you out then start looking for another job. As tempting as it is to ring the bloke up and tell him to shove it you won't be doing yourself any favours. If you have kids and a mortgage you need to get another job sorted first. Surely you can stick it for a few more weeks whilst looking for another job. Then once you've got a new job then tell him to stick it! Good luck.
Get another job lined up. its always easyier to get another job if you currently have one!
find something else then hand in your notice, basically put up with it and just take sick days for when you have interviews. You have a mortgage and kids to look after
sucks to be in that posistion though fella

would go in tomorrow as usuall .. then on monday phone area manager and ask politly if he wants to loose you to another company who have already contacted you with a reasonable offer ...
see what his reaction is ..
if he says piss off then politly tell him you will hand in your notice asap..
if he says what will make you stay outline all the problems you have . and give him a deadline to comeback to you about getting them resolved. politly ask for it in writing to confirm the converstaion.
tell him you will be working to the legal guidlines set out about working hours etc refer to your contract about your working hours and ask him what he will be doing for cover when you are on your breaks.
give him reasonable time to return with answers about how he can make your job better 1 week should suffice .
see what happens after that ..
but always be polite and do not get stressed out about it all as if you have to resign its always nie to get some form of reference from a previous employer.
dont forget the area manager has to report to someone aswell .. might be worth jumping him and going higher.

By all means pull him to one side though !!!
cheers guys
problem is i have highlighted this to my area manager-last week was i'll try to sort sumat out. He dont care
I wish i was on £50k. Try £20k
I started there for them on 9th jan. There answert to evrythingis "get rid". if your late "get rid", made a mistake "get rid", lost a few quid on the till "get rid"
Thats wrong and immoral inmy opinion, so its a bit deeper to be honest than the way i feel. Its a personnel issue that you support others and ehlep them out
Not just sack them. I can do that, but its not right is it. Its not like they stole £500

I would not be doing that for £20k, no way mate!
Have a serious chat with the area manager and go above him if you get an unsatisfactory answer from him. at the end of the day they wont want to lose you if they are as busy as you say. However i would lining up other jobs before quiting, but i would be lining them up sooner rather than later

ian, just tell him to shove it up his arse! going to work for myself was the best thing i ever done and have never looked back once.
you'll find forcing unemployment on yourself makes you think of something quick
at 20k mate you can get that driving a van for an agency(less hours and hassle as well!), i wouldnt take any shit!

I would speak to ACAS... look on the net... they have really good advice and help.
Also look up the working time regulations act.
You can find the whole thing on the internet.
This will give you details of your working rights.. but basically- 6 hours worked equals 20 mins break that is your legal minimum and they're breaking the law not letting you have it... BUT They are not breaking the law if they offer these breaks and you CHOOSE not to take them
If you get no satisfaction from your direct line manager go above his head in every instance I have done this the person above doesn't really know whats going on at ground level and thus is often somewhat concerned when they find out.
Hope this helps... coming from a retail environment I am quite up on HR rules and similar so if you have any specifics I may be able to help.
Jake
