Default running a saff everyday???

i hope to be in the market for a 4x4 saff in the next few weeks

my intension is as a daily drive, its took me years to convince the mrs and her only pre requisite(sp???) is that it is a daily drive and we sell our v6 mondeo as she refuses to spend that much and sit it in the garage

how reliable are they everyday in say stg1 tune?, whats economy like?
only do around 800 miles a year anyway so it wont take to much grief

is the msd closed loop system worth considering on this level of tune?? or is that better left for greens and above??/

all opinions appreciated

cheers

my mum uses her stage 3 tuned cossie every day (2wd) and my dad drives his black standard 4x4 every day and they are both very reliable.

its all about how theyre looked after at the end of the day mate

I drove my nicely tuned 2wd cossie every day for two years and was very good, it broke down 2twice in that time and 1 was stupid as i went over a cattle grid to fast and the car cut out........fuel shut off shut its self lol and the second was the starting motor which just went one day in a car park.....

Run both of ours on a daily basis, stg 1 4x4 and stg 3 2wd.

800 miles a year... are you sure

Anyway, all cossies are reliable as long as you don't go silly power (even then they can be reliable), and maintain them properly.
I've had my 4x4 7 years almost to the day and used it daily without any major problems.

Now, the more power you get out of the engine won't necessarily decrease reliability, but it is likely to reduce overall engine life, meaning more frequent rebuilds, there are no absolute figures, so can't quote anything here to help.
My 4x4 for example has 120,000 on the clock on its original engine, I doubt a stage 3 would last that long.

Most important thing to bear in mind is that these girls are not getting any younger and by and large fall into classic car maintenance scenarios. Things are rusting and need replacing, old items like looms perish and need replacing, and that's potentially where hidden costs exists compared to a more modern car.
The car isn't unreliable like a new TVR, it's just unreliable-ish because it's getting old

Hope this helps.

You'll be fine mate! Just keep on top of servicing it.

The economy thing is an issue though. Only because you won't be able to resist booting it!

I bought my Stage 3 4x4 just to use on weekends, but i've started using it daily. Makes it easier to get up in the morning, knowing I have a fire breathing cossie sat in the garage waiting!

My Stage 3 4x4 drinks the juice, but if you need to do a motorway run you can get good economy but only if you never exceed 65-70.

Same here used to use my old saff everyday, did 20,000 in it in 2 years. Was at a stage one tune and was a lovely car to drive around in, very smooth.

with petrol prices the way they are, closed loop fuelling is the way forward, no matter what stage of tune it is

as said already, regular maintenance is essential to keep both reliability high, and costs down. good advice from frog

hell mate

i ran my stage 3 saph cossie everyday as a daily driver to work - only work abotu 4 miles away - silly really but it was ok, it did drink petrol a bit, but on long rungs and on short trips where i was moving all the time i was returning 25-33mpg!!! thats without Closed loop! - i did look into that, but i didnt get chance to get it as the car got nicked after i owned it 7 months!

BASTARDS!!!

i did spend a few quid on it, i had the head rebuilt and did a fair amount of maintenance on it but then im a mechanic so that didnt really matter - still cost jsut short of Ł1200 for a head rebuild with me doing the labour!!

i think closed loop is around Ł150 for a kit, but you need an L8 Ecu and it needs to me modified by stu or sumthin - might be a few more quid than that - there is a post on here somehwere about it im sure
