If it sounds like the engine is weak on cold starting its worth checking the starter motor. CVH's suffer with starters and its always harder to start a cold engine as nothing has heated up and/or expanded so the engine will be a little tighter.

If it was a fuelling problem or something alike it wouldn't bump start well either.....just a thought

A good point but these systems should maintain pressure. The prime is there to ensure a positive re-start but in most cases even without a prime the pressure is sufficient. Don't overlook this though its a good point none the less

Something else that just popped into my head is these cars have inductive CPS sensors, and it the car is turning over too slow they don't produce sufficient voltage to the ECU, but hence why when u bump start it the car starts. My money is on the starter

Ah right i see, if u look down the front of the engine u will wee the wiring plug and it sticks through into the gearbox/flywheel. I doubt this is your problem though, if the engine doesnt spin over fast enough the output voltage of the sensor wont be high enough, the faster the CPS reads signals the higher the AC Voltage is across the outputs.

sounds like you mite hav 2 get back 2 the basics. have u checked 2 c if its gettin spark at the plugs. pull a plug lead off, stick a spare plug in it and turn the engine over and c if its sparking. try all four. least then u can maybe rule a sparking problem out.

What for a starter?? I've never bought one funny enough being prone as they are, but as u look down the front of the engine there its right there, u will see the THICK red starter cable running to it. Personally i'd buy a New Ford one and not a re-con, or u might get lucky and get a god second hand one cheap.

Before he spends out though get him to have a battery check done, which is usually free. This will also cause the same problem if the battery is getting weak.

As i said earlier up, either a lazy starter or a knackered battery. If the engine doesn't spin over fast enough the sensor won't produce adequate signal voltage for the ecu, but when you tow-start it, it does because your not using the battery to start.

If i were you, first things first, battery test, if its fucked, buy a new one and try again, if its ok, try another starter.

Not being funny mate but it sounds like that machanic doesn't know what hes on about. Theres 3 things on a plate on the bulkhead:

1. MAP Sensor
2. EDIS4 module
3. CO Potentiometer.

I'm guessing he's talking about the EDIS4, which is what has the basic spark settings in, which it calculates from the CPS. The ECU then takes information from all the other engine sensors and modifies the signal and sends a SAW (Spark Advance Word) to the EDIS4, but if something fails the car will still run from the EDIS4 alone but with compromised performance and economy.

If the car starts, and runs as normal from a tow start, its extremely unlikely to be anything like that. If you understand what im getting at?
