Default Rebuilding modern engines, is it possible?

I just wondering on modern engines where things are laser aligned and made by robots can they be stripped down and rebuilt accurately like older engines can be?

For example the newer ford engines that go in the new focus an the old puma can they be rebuilt as i heard rumours that you can only change certain parts like the con rods and pistons but not the crank. This is what puzzles me becuase its laser aligned so how or who can fit a new crank in, i doubt the crank is very strong as a mass produced unit so fitting new rods an pistons would mean the crank is the weakest part in the bottom end, when it goes the whole rebuild be pointless. Or am i thinking like a duck with its head up its tail feathers.

You can rebuild any engine potentially, but obviously if it runs very tight clearances you need to be able to accurately measure down to those clearances.

Of course you are right, but when everything is keyless and laser alligned it makes it a good bit harder

If it's mechanical and can be put together then it can be taken apart and rebuilt.

a lot of later ford engines you can only buy a short engine, its less hassle for main dealers, less parts to stock, most main dealers wouldnt have enough staff with the savvy to build an engine either. the costs on some of them are not to bad, a 2 litre focus zetec short engine is about Ł400 + vat.

interesting, so ford sell short engine but if you wanted to uprate the crank it is possible but expensive. If somethings keyless how can you put something together if you have no guides or figures?

Well put it this way, the latest decent ford engines, ie the 2-2.3litre Duratec, there is already countless uprated cranks, conrods, pistons, blah blah, so you think tis not easy rebuildable?

Basically Ford cant be arsed, like all manufacturers its a lot easier and cheaper to luzz in another of their mass produced bottom ends rather than fix the broke one.

But they can be, and therefore are easily uprated too.

Well me and my dad have put a few crossflows and cvh's together in the gagarge at home but if it came to doing a 1.6 Zetec SE which is keyless it would be easier to bin it and buy a new one

Why is it being keyless so much of an issue?

Line it up, tighten it up.

No different to a set of verniers really!

Keyless? What about DTI ing the piston crown to determine an acurate TDC point?

Piece of piss....
