Can anyone give me some advice?
Bought a new thermostat last week for my Escort cos big turbo, fitted it on car But bottom hose and bottom of rad was not getting hot.
So I fitted the old one back and the bottom hose got hot.
I took the new one back and they changed it, fitted it on car tonight and the bottom hose is not getting hot again! The bottom of rad is cold too. This is after running car for 45 minutes.

Put both thermostats in a saucepan of boiling water and the new one took alot longer to open, never opened as much as the old one. The new one closed a lot quicker than the old one. Do you think this is another faulty stat?

And yes, when i fitted the stat to the car I put the top mark to the top of housing

I only decided to change the stat because my temperature gauge was sitting higher than normal.
New temp sender fitted from Woodfords.
New fan switch
new ect sensor
and I have flushed all the system.
So I don't know what to do now
Do I take it back and say its another faulty stat?

could it be head gasket? as to why the temps were higher originally?

We did think that at one time but im not loosing no water and none into the bores because the plugs look fine.
With the old stat fitted, car starts fine, drives lovely no mis fires, the only thing the temp gauge is sitting just over half way. When I bought the car it used to sit a quarter of the way up off the blue. Now fans dont cut in till the needle reaches the black line under the red. The oil pressures reading a quarter of the way up when this happens, but when you open the bonnet theres no major heat coming from the engine bay.
Any other ideas?

 

You sure you've got the exact same stat. Cause theres usually different temperature stats you can buy

 

but why would the first one alter temps from a 1/4 to 1/2.

you could put the first one back in then see what happens from there.

Yeah it is mate i had numbers check as well by DOO

 

It started going to halfway one day when i was driving in Januray and thats why i thought the stat was knacker so i thought if i change it it will take it back down again but with the new stat bottom hose and rad dont get warm and it still sits half way

I dont no mate getting well fed up now

 

What temperature is the coolant ACTUALLY running at? (seeing as you say there's no appreciable heat coming from the engine bay, and the fans appear to come on and off as they should..)
You are basing all your temperature readings on the notoriously inaccurate coolant temperature gauge..

 

Not sure mate as i say it was sitting higher before we change it

but this wood not cause the stat to open

 

How can i test what the engine is running at ?

All i know is this is my second big turbo Escos the temp gauge all ways sat a quarter of the way up on driving and the fans would cut in about half way in traffic

and the same on my old one

Then all of a sudden one day the temp gauge was sitting on the half way i thought this dont seem right And then the next time i took it out on motor way at night the weather was well cold i was doing about 80mph and the temp gauge was just over half way and thats why i started changing these bits to see if it would cure it

 

No other ideas what it might be

Im going to put the old stat back because i no that one makes the bottom hose hot and take it to Paul hills and get the head gasket checked

I want to get it rolling road but because of the temp i dont want to take a chance

Rizla, you need to know what the temperature of the coolant coming out of the stat really is (thermocouple or similar slipped inside the top hose), the gauge/sender are notoriously unreliable (although in most cases changing the sender like you say you have usually fixes that...) IMO the bottom hose being cold with the new stat is a red herring and kinda suggests to me that the old stat is opening too early and letting coolant flow round the rad earlier than it needs to, warming up the rad with "warm" water. Are these tests being done with the car standing, or after a drive (to get proper heat into the engine and coolant)?
Mine will sit on my drive running from cold for ages without the fans running, in this cold weather I fancy they may never come on, the rad is sufficient to cool the water enough in these conditions, engine idling on the drive.
The stat should be open around 88-92deg.C to let water into the rad, that is way too hot to hold on to with your hand - if you can hold the top hose with the old stat when it is open, then it is open too early at to low a temperature.

I keep emphasising your reliance on the gauge indication of temperature - mine used to sit at about 1/4 on the gauge all the time, from 5 minutes after the engine started until the fans came on, which is obviously nonsense, periodically it would go up over halfway then come back again while driving... - just illustrates the unreliability that's all I'm saying. Changing the sender did fix this by the way, so that it reads mid way normally, and a tad higher when the fans cut in.

Ford's YB stats are crap the past few years, tend to run teh engine around 94degrees. We no longer use them.

 

where do you get them from instead Stu?

 

The test me and rizla have done are with the car idleing in his garage,


Both stas have 82.c on the bottom of them which is i assume the temperature that they are ment to open at, but the new one he got
from ford's is opening later than his old stat,we put both stats in a
sausepan and watch them both to the boil and the new stat only
opened right near to the boiling where as the old one had fully
opened by then which make's me think that they are a bad batch
of thermostats ford's are supplying or as stu has said there crap.

What ive suggested to rizla is we put the old stat back in the
car and go for a good drive in it putting it under load and normal
driving and see where the car s temprature is at!

 

 

I have also heard that the thermostats from ford are crap too.

Can any one tell me why the 4X4 stat is a lot more than a 2WD stat in price

 

Rip off no other reason,when you compare
an escos thermostat with any other there is no
difference in it that would justify charging Ł40+
for one and say Ł7 for the other.

Total rip off

 

I have heard though rizla that some people use mondeo
thermostats in there escos as there an identical size and
fit yet cost a hell of a lot less,dont not what temperature
there set at though,im sure some people off here have
used them!

Mate, your 4x4 one should be almost EXACTLY the same as mine, the key point being the secondary disc. If yours looks like the top (2wd) one, hes given you teh wrong bloody one anyway

How much are the one's you use and do you supply
them?
