if you are not going to tune it
or keep it less then 300 bhp then small turbo

if you want to tune it, and get more than 300 bhp, then get a big turbo one. (i guess thats the easiest way of lookin at it)

AS A STANDARD CAR the small turbo ones are more 'user friendly' as they are less laggy.

Not sure I understand that.... quick enough for what? If you only want standard, the small turbo will be quicker on acceleration than a standard big turbo, because of less lag.

Small turbo escort cossies are faster than large turbo ones in std form.
If you want to make it faster, as sadi above, upto 300bhp is the equivelent power for a small turbo as 330bhp on a large turbo model.
Small turbo cars are easier to drive, especially daily
Large turbo cars are easier to extract power from over 300bhp.

I have had loads of small turbo"s and big turbo"s

1, small turbo"s arnt quicker at all , they run out of steam at 5000rpm as the big turbo keeps pulling , so although the small turbo may pull away a tiny bit , when he hits 2nd gear the big turbo flys past and keeps pulling

Have you ever seen a std small turbo and a std big turbo go head to head ,,????? The big turbo easy pulls away

2, the big turbos sell better if you get sick of it

3, the big turbo is better for BLINGING under the bonnet

4, Easier to work on ,,IMO, Less shit to go wrong

5, Looks a lot better under the bonnet

The small turbo is a little better for "round town" driving tho , but who buys a cossie for round town driving

All, IMO, tho

I totally disagree with Paul

ST is far more reliable, looks better and has far more reliable components, it also has the latest block and head design, better than the LT.

10X better to live with as a daily car town and twice as good on fuel as well.

I also think the ST looks better under the bonnet, the LT looks OLD.

All, IMO of course.

This is a good post as it shows that only you can make your own mind up about which you would rather own / maintain / bling up

Hope whatever you buy gives you many happy motoring miles

I would say if looks are more important than power, then go for the small turbo, as they that little bit newer.

But if you are going to decided one day to get a bit more power or take it on
track then get the big turbo one..

I am a prime example, i bought the escos and said i am not modding it, it is
staying as it is... erm.......... that lasted two weeks ..lol...

If you get a small turbo one, then look out for the following;

Leather- a must have
Aircon- good idea
Airbag, passenger & driverside- good idea
Electric windows- yes
Electric sunroof- yes
Fuel cap door shuts properly- a must
Turbo needs replacing at 60,000- usually go for one that's had a new turbo.
1995-1996 registration- good
Std car will have no ecu tampered with. Chipped ones will have signs as follows- trim panel screws mashed, socket marks on the 10mm bolt that secures the ecu loom, glue missing from ecu circuit board where chip fits and usually plastic cover also missing from here too.
Exhaust will have cats- new MOT laws to watch for.
Brakes warp easily on most Escorts anyway.
I'm going to lunch!!

When I got mine as standard, there was no way I was going to mod it.... but that soon changed as I got used to the car, gradually did more and more mods until I could go no further as it'd reached max bhp for a small turbo. I was happy as the car was, until I started to track it, then found it lacking powerwise, so I then forked out and had a big turbo conversion done, which I don't regret.

I think I would have probably stuck with it being small turbo, if I hadn't got into tracking. As an everyday car, it was easy and very reliable.

Jenni,
Expand your search to Germany / Italy, you can pick up Escort Cosworths for next to nothing - I'm talking WELL under £10k for LHD examples. I can put you in touch with someone that can find you a nice one if you like?
