Gents,
I have the rare opportunity to hit the gym at lunchtime cos my boss is off today... woohoo!
However, one of my favourite excercises is the upright row using 30 odd kg on the olympic bar and it's been causing me wrist problems recently.
From what I've heard this excercise is notorious for causing wrist injuries so I was wondering if anyone knew of a suitable alternative?
I'm planning to try it with the ez bar but last time I did this it started hurting after a while, hence the swap to a straight one.

Apparently the upright row is a really bad excersise anyway mate, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. You are getting quite a few muscles when you do this from the deltoids to the traps. So just pick another excersise you don't do? Front raisers or something?

Thing is though, I like it! (When it's nto hurting my wrists that is!
)
It's one of the few excercises that I seem to regulaly make consistent progress with weight wise.
Already doing front raises (hate them though!)

Sorry didn't see thris thread earlier so probably a bit late to answer now.
I agree with Benni, its an awkward exercise that hits a couple of muscle groups so you would be better trying more specific movements. Side Raises and front raises maybe?
I was also going to suggest using an EZ bar as it takes some of the twisting off the wrists but you've already covered that. better than a straight bar though. I just think due to the unnatural movement its not the sort of exercise you can go heavy on. Maybe go slightly lighter and try drop setting it?
Oh, I've just had an idea!!! Do it on a cable machine with a rope. The rope with knots on the ends that you would usually use for tricep pulldowns, reverse that movement and use the cable pull at the bottom of the machine. That should allow you ample movement in your wrists to take the strain away from them.
