Default difference between free weights and the machines

new to all this and been going the gym for about 6 weeks now but only ever been on the machines.

why do all the big lads prefer the free weights? can anyone tell me what the difference is.

Cheers,
Jim.

Free weights have no fixed range of movement and require control to stop them pitching left and right, foreward and back and in the cases of dumbbells, bi-lateral control. Therefore more balance is required and not only challenges your neuromuscular system much more to cope with this, but also mimics sport performance/movements much more. In other words the gains from free weights are far superior and sport specific, so get on to them using just simple exercises.
