Default Ford techs help!

My girlfriends mk6 fiesta has developed a loud twanging like a spring uncoiling when turning from lock to lock.

I crawled underneath the best I could with a torch but it's too low (standard) to get underneath properly.

The only unusual (to me) thing I can see is what looks and feels like a rubber tube dangling down the inside of the drivers front spring and can't see or feel one on the passengers side. But I don't know if that's normal or not at all..?

It hasn't done this ever before and I used it today on a 50 mile round trip and it hadn't done it then and just now we went to go out in it and it started. It reverberates around the car it's a loud twang!

Just got it home put my work clothes back on managed to get under it.

You was correct Steve, what I thought was rubber tube is the very top flat coil, snapped off and stuck around the shock inside the rest of the spring.

What sorta job is this? My dad has changed springs before so it just a case of stripping the whole strut down getting the fucked coil off and getting a new one on the strut?

U dnt need to change top mounts or strut. Only change them if it's damaged. Just change the spring. Ull soon see if damage has occurred when u fit the spring. If ur unsure. I run a workshop in dagenham. Pop it in n I'll inspect it for u

Lucky I have a stock of nylon locking nuts. Heat it up then whizz them off. I see many many fiestas aswell and can say that I dnt see rotten strut nuts. So opinions vary. Also I'd like to meet ur customers lol. Come in for snapped springs n u spank them for shocks which work perfect n perfectly fine top mounts. Quality business lol.

Yeh heat them up. Not to melting point. Amazing when you try it. The only trouble I've had is on the ford galaxy's as they do get soaked and do rott. Never had trouble with fiestas.
I've never had to replace everything lol

Great design, the rain tray drains the water straight into the OSF top mount.

Great advice heating a shock absorber up.

But as they say, each to their own.

Im not arguing lol. Just voicing an opinion which he has different views on. Each to there own. But I'd personally advise only replace what's needed. I very much doubt top mount n shock will need to be replaced

Heating the nut will not harm anything. Obviously not to melt the nut. Just heat the nut enuff to release it

I changed same spring on a mates fiests ST. That had done the same.

He got the spring from the local motor factors.

Also got new pinch bolt for lower arm, nut for steering rod end and a new nut for the end of the driveshaft.

Easy enough job to do with basic tools and spring compressors.

if you do change anything it's normally best practice to change them in axle sets as you don't want one side new and the other side being fucked

when the spring snapped on my mondeo it broke the top mount as well so not that i'm saying it's got to be done, but at £12 a side, is it worth leaving alone and then needing to get the tracking all sorted once you've put it all back together again?

Yeah I saw in the Haynes manual that it suggested replacing a bunch of nuts, particularly any under a fair bit of torque

Will deffo be changing per axle bud, seems its quite cheap to buy it all in pairs Ive noticed. Thanks for the heads up tho on the top mounts!

Ive not had the chance to have a look at it since it shat itself its just sat parked up coz of work. Shit time of the year for it to happen though as I bet it will be a nightmare trying to find motor factors open now..

Just to add, the lower pinch bolt that secures the shock into the hub, if it's tight, get some heat on it. If it snaps in the hub you're in a whole world of pain.

(Yes,yes I know I said don't heat up the shock, but you're not going to really, just the hub/knuckle)

as per PM,

either but EVERYTHING new, Strut, spring and strut top

OR (rather than "spanking you" as previously said )

buy a complete used item and bolt it on!
no need to disturb the dreaded top nut

and about £40 a side used and gets you on the road

Using euro car parts I found 2 x springs for £26 odd each, and front left and front right shocks for £46-47 odd each but they havent got top mounts in stock but saw some genuine ford ones on ebay for £20 each so £200 would give me everything i need?

So I had a crack at this today.. was all going well, had the strut out of the hub and clear of all the wheel arch. Put the allen key into the top of the shock and was turning the nut around whilst holding the middle still with the allen key then it just span, when i looked close up it had crack down the thread so the allen key just span in the hole as there was no longer any pressure on it.

So, ive got 2 new shocks reserved for tomorrow morning and going to pick up 2 new strut tops too. eurocarparts have got 25% off shocks atm so can get both for £70. Got the springs for £18 + vat from GSF car parts in West Thurrock.
