Default Flywheel?

Hi, is the flywheel different on an rs1600i to other cvh engines. Ie where does the crank position sensor in the gearbox pick its signal up from? Is it the line on the clutch side of the flywheel?

The flywheel on a 16i is unique, it has a special tooth, which is where the gearbox sensor takes its signal from .

Would be hard to find, and expensive when you do. It's probably just a dimensional difference, probably height, or it might have something welded onto a tooth. It'll just be something to make 1 tooth stand out so the sensor can count revs.

I modify flywheels to run with gearbox mounted speed sensors all day long, we just spot weld some flat welding wire onto a tooth. At the end of the day its just some metal passing over a magnet making a current. Same as an alternator or dynamo or generator.

Thanks for this.... Been doing a bit more research on Internet and found this..... http://a400mod.com/AFT.htm

So I either need some mu metal (what ever that is?) , a special spot welder, and the patern exactly where it was welded.... Or a flywheel...... Mmmmm got a feeling this is gonna be nightmare!

That's why most run a distributor these days

Really don't want to do that though.... Originality is the key!

I found out that mu metal is a metal that SHIELDS magnetism..... Also this mu metal is readily availible so it may be possible to make an rs1600i flywheel..... I just need to know where to fix this metal and how to fix this metal?

Does any one have a flywheel I can copy?

Failing that I suppose keep my eyes peeled for him to buy one?

Are your talking concours originality or just making sure it looks right? You can run twin coils without the flywheel or sensor lead with aftermarket bits

Making sure it looks right with the main details to be honest? Can we get away with a fiesta rs turbo crank position sensor set up?

Thanks for this...... Been googling my arse off and found ford stamped rs1600i flywheels with h 81 sm6375aa..... Thought I would add this to the thread to try and help anyone else who has had their flywheel stolen!

You can use something like mega jolt running a fiesta cps or similar to fire the original coils. Have even seen the mega jolt board built into a proper 1600i ecu box. Looks original but is easily replaced, probably cheaper too

that may well have been me, i fitted a megajolt into an rsi ecu case a few years ago when i fitted a tt kit as i wanted it to run coils, very easy to do and used all the standard wiring and i made up a lead that plugged into the standard crank sensor lead but converted it to a fiesta efi sensor, i also drilled the bottom end and used a efi flywheel but kits are readily available for converting the bottom pulley to take a sensor.

as Tony mentioned the rsi flywheel is unique as it has the 'magic tooth' on one of the teeth so would be difficult to reproduce but not impossible at a guess

this was the original rough version which i eventually refined a little, the relays are added to keep the fuel shut off system and 'eco lights' working

the advantage with this setup was it can be mapped to suit unleaded and a higher rev limit can be put in if the engine is setup for it,

by the time you buy a megajolt and trigger wheel setup it would probably be cheaper to buy a standard flywheel though

Yes that'd be you fella, remember the pics. My only wonder was getting the ecu to run RSI coils rather than the usual ford 4 poster? Is it as simple as different loom plugs?

Just use the original loom and coils, the modern coil pack is the same principal as 16i coils they are just 2 coils in the same lump of plastic , wiring wise they share a live and have a negative signal from the ecu,
I also used to keep a coil pack off a focus as a back up in case one of the 16i coils failed, I made up an adaptor lead to go from the 16i loom to a 3 pin plug that fits the coil packs
