Default steering wheel removal

Hi everyone. I've got a 1999 1.6 escort. tried changing the wheel today for a nice new sparco one. got the boss kit which to no suprise doesnt fit - even though it should. the thing that appears to be getting in the way is this plastic disc that rotates just behind the steering wheel connection, it looks like it has stuff to do with the indicator mechanisms and whatnot. if i put the boss kit over the top of it, the nut doesnt reach the steering column, if i put the boss kit on, leaving the plastic bit flapping about underneath, the wheel fits, bolts in but the boss kit touches the metal and it just feels all wrong. like i could make it work for the sake of it, but i could also find myself wrapped around something if I did.

so two questions
1. do I just have the wrong boss kit (thanks ebay)
2. are ford escorts particularly fussy about changing the wheel and is there some way i can bypass this plastic ring of doom?

Thanks in advance!

Is it the clock spring? If so that's the electrical contacts for the airbag and the horn, which I think you do away with.

richie is spot on, biggest issues are indicators no longer self cancel and you need to hard wire the horn plus airbag light will come on, personally its not worth the aggro
