DVLA can get you a replacement log-book but it will possibly be sent to the last known owner's address..which will be one of the cousins. Call DVLA and ask them what to do. Tell them you've just bought it and they will prob confirm with the cousins who owns the car now. They will have to call them as you could have stolen the car and trying to claim it as your own if they don't check.
You could pop back if you know the lad quite well (must do really otherwise he wouldn't have just given you the car) and say you need the log-book to tax it when the time comes and simply ask him. While your there ask if the vin is with the logbook as well. Not an easy situation but he probably didn't think of that at the time and you're not asking anything horrible even tho the car has memories for him.
As for vin plates. Once you get the log-book you can buy the plates from Ford for roughly £3 or £4. However they send them away to get stamped and that costs around £40 extra.
