upgrading motherboard
Just poped into town and bought a new graphics card for my pc
a geforce fx5500 256mb
Running P4 2.8
768mb ram
Now he suggested that i might need to upgrade my motherboard etc as i still have some problems with running games
like for example Command and conquer and i choose a 8 player map
it just gets slower and slower
as the game goes on
However my laptop plays the game so fast its just unreal and thats got a 64mb card with a p4 1.6 processor 2mb cache memory
I need to know how do i check what motherboard i have etc the comp is over 2 years old now
also any other upgrades i should do

The fx5500 is a bit of a naff card TBH.
Have a look here for a comparison on cards.

A 6600 GT (or 6800GT) should prove to be a lot better.

Not always the case m8. My AMD 3200 (2.2 ghz cpu) witha geforce FX5600 graphivs card runs Command And Conquer Generals perfectly fine, whereas both AndyRST and Tony Turbo struggle to play the game on thier shonky P4's
You won't be able to properly play Battlefield 2 with that card
What other games don't run properly ?

Dan thats the only game i have atm with a real problem
i bought the fx5500 cheap as my comp only had a geforce 4400 card in it when i bought it over 2 years ago (128mb)
so for me it is an upgrade
but running c and c it makes no difference at all
am i just best off putting my own computer together from scratch?

That depends on the spec of the rest of your system really m8.
The way I test them is simple :
I open up Command And Conquer Generals : Zero Hour and start a skirmish. I use the Death Valley map (8 player) and just have me, and an easy army. I start in the top left, and put the enemy in the bottom right.
Start with as much money as possible, and have your army as USA Air Force General. Build an airfileld as quickly as you can, and then purchase all the commanche upgrades available.
I then create about 15 - 20 commanches and then select them all and move them about. Any lagging / slowing down means you'll have to look at upgrading the machine
