SSD hard disks speed up slower Pcs / laptops without needing to replace whole machine.
It pays to use a 'limited' user account for daily PC use and keep 'administrator' log in for installing progs etc.evin
System restore is often the best bet if you get a pile of cr4p on machine thats stubborn. You never know if you remove offensie stuff if its realy all gone.
Sorry for long winded ansa, IT is my job.
Cheers

I do need to upgrade my tower really as its a old dell dimension 3100 running 1gb of ram and 160hd on xp, graphics are pants, but due to it being reliable I have thus far been unable to part with it, really need w7 and some more up to date software

Never had any issues with a mac. Decided to get one after me and the mrs going through 2 laptops each, and yes anti virus was installed on all. Made sense with the cost of repairs and replacements.
Just had to remove the hard drives to get everything off them.

Must admit, Apple vs Windows, in terms of reliability and execution, it's no contest. My work Windows phone reboots itself several times a day, crashes and loses connection - I cannot remember the last time I had to reboot my iPhone or it have a panic.
Likewise, I cannot remember my MacBook ever crashing (like Windows computers that often BSOD), or needing rebooting (other than major software updates - love how it updates apps and software without needing to be restarted). And the lack of virus and malware attacks is great. They aren't 100% immune, but the threat is so minimal compared to Windows.
They can take a bit of getting used to, as it is a different way of working, but once you get past the differences, there's no looking back. Not to me at least

Anti virus is all taken care off as best apple can with out having the need for installing AV. And apple support are fantastic.

I never got why some had trouble with that. My MacBook, which is getting for 6 years old, could right click copy paste out the box, and the windows CTRL+C and V works exactly the same on Mac too (just with the CMD, which is is the primary modifier, button instead of CTRL). I actually wish I could turn off the right click, as with a track pad, or a Magic Mouse, you just don't need it (because of multi gestures, two finger tapping brings up the right click menu anyway)
My biggest bug-bear is highlighting a file and hitting ENTER, only for it to facilitate a name change rather than opening the file
CMD+down arrow opens a file, which seems a bit odd, but there you go!

ive just bought all the compontents on ebay to build a basic but upgradeable machine for £156..
AMD A8-6600K 3.9Ghz
Gigabyte Motherboard
4 Gb 1866mhz DDR3 Ram,
1 Tb Hard Drive
Card Reader
Keyboard and a few misc bits..
Using an old case I have lieing around and dvd writer I have here, and a PSU, saving me about £40, shove a copy of Windows 7 on it (already own and as its replacing a PC which now no longer exists its legal
) and ive got a good machine.
This is using some second hand parts, but I calculated I could do it using all new parts for £260, but then im a skint cheapskate

Now now, play nice
But yeah, I haven't even upgraded the RAM in mine yet, as it seems quite happy sat on 4GB. I did swap the drive out for an SSD though, as I needed more space on it, and it now runs faster, smoother, quieter and cooler. Result!

We've got a mac at work that no longer supports the latest builds of the much of the software we use. Yet it will not accept a newer OS so its pretty much redundant.

Having just looked it up OS Mavericks cut off is any iMac older than mid 2007. So it was an old unit

We also wanted to throw more ram in it, however that is also hardware limited to a particular speed and size. Recently starting to use inDesign (8gig recommended), 4gb wasn't going to cut it.

Oh I gathered the flippancy. But saying something that's untrue, in retort to something said that you believe to be untrue, doesn't make either of them better, does it?
But this is (now) the Windows vs Mac saga, and it's always the same. Windows users say Macs are shit, usually because they don't understand them, or how they work. And Mac users say Windows is shit, usually because they've used Windows before, and now use Macs
And it's the same old stuff time after time. Windows users saying Macs don't have right click (false), or copy and paste (false) or that you can't upgrade them (false), or they are obsolete in a couple years (false), etc etc. Mac users saying Windows crashes every five mins (false) or that they are slow (false) or that Windows OS's are self corrupting OS's and need to be reinstalled cleanly every so often (actually true).
Pffft, just use what you want. And if you don't like either, go Linux

I have not said macs were shit.. some of the design or build ideas do make me wonder but I have an appreciation for all technology im not blinded or drawn into the hype. I dont have a mac as I dont need one.. I prefered the samsung over the I phone and the htc I tried the technology to make a decision....
