Default Help with wireless setup.

My dad recently changed his computer in favour of a laptop. After swapping things around we got the internet working on his laptop wirelessly through the computer with a wireless router/modem. The computer has now been removed and I managed to get everything working for the laptop to still work. A few weeks ago the wireless router broke. He has since brought a Belkin Surf N300 wireless n modem router. But I cant get it going to save my life. i am not very savvy with computer set up. Basically I have plugged the thing in, put the telephone line into it and not sure what to do next. Any help would be appreciated. Do I need to make the laptop the main hub somehow. I have tried using the ethernet from the wireless router/modem to laptop but nothing. I can connect to the router but not the internet.

Are all the lights on? eg Internet etc?

If not it could be a line fault. By connected the router to the laptop by wire, it should definitely connect if the internet is there

There is only one light on the thing. Always goes red, should be blue. Has to be the line I reckon

Have you put all the configuration details into the modem? What ISP does he use? I'd just ring them, say modem is fooked, send me a new one or i'm leaving.

New modem should arrive and it'll be a simple plug and play.

Ah ok, yeah usually there is a few for connection, wireless, internet etc

The phone side can work perfectly fine, while there being a line fault which stops the internet side working. Does sound likely! Only other thing, is hunt through the settings, and check they're all as should be, and that you don't need to put any information into it

Definately. There is no need to be buying your own hardware to access their service. I had this argument with sky recently when my modem went tits up and they wanted me to pay for a new one, after explaining to them I could go elsewhere and get a new free modem, they soon had a new one in the post FOC.
