Do any other devices use the router for an internet connection?
If so are they working? If not problem will probably be with the router or ISP or phone line. Can you make a call on your landline?
WEP key is a method of security to stop people jumping on your wireless connection. This is typically user set so who ever set up the connection should know what this is. Without this you will not be able to connect any devices to the router
PS3 wise i'm not by mine so can't guide you exactly however it sounds like your in the right place. Does it have a sort of tick list where it checks for connection, then IP then PNP etc if so the ps3 is doing everything to try and get a connection but can't. Not playstations fault.
As above firstly check to see if other devices can get a connection!

Ok wired should be fine without the wep key.
You need to make a new connection and go through the new connection wizard. The first page asks you if you would like to set up wireless or wired.
As you are able to "hard wire" the ps3 i would go that route as not only is it easier to set up but you'll also benefit from a better connection. To start with a would allow the ps3 to do this automatically just to try and get connected. Again from memory this is in the network connections menu on the ps3
the first page as above ask's you if you would like to set up a wireless or wire connection. Once you get here you are in the right place

Ok failing that on your pc (assuming you are running windows) click start, run and type in CMD in the new window that opens type ipconfig /all
Write the results down and set the connection up manually and type the details obtained from the above into the ps3

did you enter all the details manually? The DNS address's can be found in the method i detailed above?
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than the favourite turning router off (leave for 5mins or so) and back on again. Try with PS3 also.
I assume your using the same connection to post on here then?

No sorry mate, work PC and leave in 2 mins :-(
I'll check my connection at home and report back but possibly be an hour...
Keep trying as mine sometimes does this and after a couple of attempts or turning router off it seems to work.
In the DNS error message you should also get a bunch of numbers, normally starting wiht 8. Record these and punch into google. That could possibly yeild some more info.
Whats your gamer tag...mines gary_bunter

Oh i didn't realise that it wasn't yours. Your sure you've manually entered the DNS numbers correctly.
It could also be your router after all, how long have you had it and what is the make and model? Have you checked for any firm ware updates. Does the router have an online page (access via the web) where you can change settings i.e. firewall
You could as a LAST RESORT format the hard drive. Although this in itself is not easy as you need either a computer that has SATA Controller or a USB SATA case.
Failing that it is really just a lap top hard drive so you could format it via a laptop although I never have.
Really strange one this mate, you are still trying all this with a wire and not wirelessly yeah
You can simply remove the HD and hook it to any standard computer that has SATA Controller on it and format it or use a utility to wipe it clean.
You can also put it in an external USB SATA case and plug it into any PC and format it also.
It's just a standard notebook SATA HD.
Will a full wipe hurt? I'm not sure. I wouldn't think so as I've already changed my HD to a new one and new ones have nothing encoded on them that is specific to the PS3, so wiping one clean shouldn't pose any problems.

ignore that last post (my poor fingers)
You now need to set up a new Playstation ID, you can do this by going over to the far right and the 2nd to last menue is Playstation network. Click account management and follow the steps

Righto,
Let's do this from scratch.
Backup all your game data from the PS3 onto a USB drive.
Reinstall the playstation operating system and register a new account in your name.
On the pc click on internet explorer, in the address bar type \\192.168.1.1 or \\192.168.1.0 (or consult the router manual) and it will open a login box, usuall the username is admin and the password is admin, or the password is password.
If this works you have opened your router up, save this in your favourites.
Close internet explorer
On the back of the router where you put power in, there should be a tiny little hole, get a paper clip and push into this hole and hold the button in for a few seconds, then power off the router and power it back on.
This will reset the router back to factory settings.
Open internet explorer, then favourites and then your router homepage, log in, and set the router up again.
