On my brothers PC, I installed a genuine version of windows XP Home about a month ago.
Yesterday he booted it up, logged in as normal and the screen said he needed to validate his copy of windows. So "OK" was clicked, and it said that windows was already validated, and then returned him to the log-on screen.
The computer is now in a circle of doing this and cannot be accessed at all except in safe mode.
Anyone any idea how to sort this out without reinstalling, his constant moaning and nagging is beginning to piss me off

There are two possible solutions here. One is caused by a permissions problem in the registry. To fix this issue, follow the steps below:
Another reason why the validation may fail occurs when the ActiveX control for the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool has been disabled. Follow the steps below to make sure the ActiveX is enabled. 1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

6. Ensure that Administrators allowed Full Control permission
7. Repeat steps 3-6 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1
If this does not fix the issue with KB905474 update not installing, download the update to your desktop and manually install it.2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK

Gracey,
When the machine is first powered on tap the F8 key until you get the startup menu, once done try last known good configuration, or safe mode and try turbocabbies suggestion, if of course it let's you into windows, failing that try the step by step guide on repairing XP.
