whats the spec of the pc?

Firstly download(even if you did the above) this http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html run that.
And then download this http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ top right click on "download lastest version" run this, and basically this will delete all the obsolete internet files/cookies and stuff like that(excellent little programme, every pc should have this installed), just note that after running this all your websites/forums that you visit will require you to re-type usernames and passwords so make sure you know them all.
After that press control alt and delete and when taskmanger pops up at the bottom of the box how many processes are there?

Now click start bar then click RUN, then in this box type MSCONFIG, a box will load up, click on startup tab, and tell me how many box's have little ticks in them?

Tell me all this info and i can help you some more

To me, slow means taking a while for the machine to boot up, then programmes loading slowly etc, hopefully when he answers my post we will see why his machine is so slow

finally.... I clicked on "reply" two days ago.

part of the reason it's slow, is because it's an old P3 933mhz PC, albiet with 1 gb ram.

I appear to have found the "daddy", and it's free.

JV16 powertools. has to be version 1.3.0.195 or less, as thats when they stopped doing it freeware. also has a shitload of other powertools in the package as well as the reg cleaner. looking good so far.

791 obsolete registry entries.

did that years ago, and check on a regular basis. having owned a computer since I was 8 I class myself as a bit of a nerd. not a full nerd tho.

yeah it is, after you have run it tell me how much MB its free'd up?
Also click on "issues" on the left hand side, then click "scan for issues" and this will clean the registry, still do it even though you have already done it with another programme as it will find things that the other missed
