Please keep the replies basic, a few things I need to know!
1. What is an IP address
2. What is a MAC address
3. What is a router
4. What is a switch
Or, are there any simple books that anybody can recommend so that I can look these up myself? Ive tried the web but the answers Ive found so far confuse me after the first three words (not hard
)

1. What is an IP address
This is a unique string of numbers that identifies a computer or server on the Internet.
2. What is a MAC address
A MAC address, short for Media Access Control address, is a unique code assigned to most forms of networking hardware. I.E. A network card.
3. What is a router
In simple terms, a device that allows you to connect 4 computers to a network, and easily share an internet connection.
Here's a pic of mine if it helps.

Basically, my pc connects to it vie network cable, and my laptop connects to it wirelessly. I can transfer files from machine to machine, and surf the net. If you brought your laptop round, you could get on the net.
4. What is a switch
Not had much experiance of a switch unfortunately, but I think it only applies in an area where you have a large network, and need to connect 2 different workgroups together ?

No worries m8, I just pasted your questions into google and found the one's I understood
If you click on start, and click on run and type in cmd. Then type in ipconfig it will show you your ip adress, and your mac address

I was asked those questions in an interview a year ago and I think if I had've got that job I wouldn't be so crap now

From Wiki (which can describe it in more detail than I'd have time to type out in work
):
IP Addresses
MAC Addresses
Routers
Switches
Shout if you need any more info, I work with all of the above on a daily basis!
