Default bt adsl connection question usb or ethernet

i got the new 8 meg connection from bt 4 weeks ago

a new router was in the package

so im thinking easy as pie plug and play ....but noooooo

so far its connecting at about 2.5m thats it

it says on the install disk ethernet connection to the pc will be a faster port... and i have the "for the want of a better word phone line plug hole .." maybe ethernet hole at the back of the pc in one of the cards

but the install disk did not recognise it ?????

it said use the usb lead

pc hasnt got a dial up router card in it if you get my drift ...

so whats the female plug hole for ????????

been told bt adsl needs 14 days to settle down but the connection is piss poor ..

considering they say i should get at least 4 meg

HOW CAN I SCAN THE PC to see what the connection hole is for ????

my pc builders not home till next week ...and its pissing me off now

Havent got a clue what your on about!

All i know is, when i had ADSL broadband from bt i had a little box which was the modem, that plugged into the pc(for connection AND power) into a usb port, obviously via USB cable, couldnt use ethernet so i have no idea how you can get ADSL and ethernet in the same sentence, unless im missing something

The ethernet connection will give you a slightly faster transfer rate. They don't guarantee top speed, it's sold as "up to 8 meg" connection, depending on how far from the exchange you are, and the quality of your phone line.

Right, I am a tad confused.

The PC will never "recognise" an ethernet connection as such. All my PC's are connected to Bband via an ethernet connection, but I have a 4-port router modem to handle my ADSL and that works like this.

phone socket on wall (ADSL point) goes to router modem. Router modem stores all the internet settings (ISP, password etc). Cat5 ethernet cable goes from router modem to PC 1, next cat 5 ethernet cable goes from routher modem to PC 2 etc.

The bit it plugs into on the PC tower is the NETWORK port;

Also known as a 10/100 port. This then shows up in My Network Places when you boot up the PC with an active ADSL signal plugged into it. With the PC set to auto configure, it takes it's lead from the router and displays internet. Downside is when the router has a "moment" or the ISP is down, the PC doesn't see a signal and just says "no connection available". Upside it you leave the router modem on 24/7 so when you boot up the PC, it has an ADSL connection instantly.

Yours having a USB, I would imagine needs to be plugged into one PC using the USB for both power and internet connection, hence the set up CD to install the drivers etc for the modem. My original ADSL set up had this (had a USB modem) and the modem turns on and off with the PC.
