ESCORT COSWORTH OFFERS
MY 1995 escort cosworth is now for sale
Offers due to running out of funds
PLEASE READ BEFORE LOOKING
Hi People
i have had my cosworth since september last year, i pay £50 a week for it for the next ten years and have only driven it a few times since i got it.
My problems started when i took it rond to my mates garage and he noticed that the top hose was inflating and the header tank was pressurising and told me the head gasket was on its way out and would need doing.Next drive just to the shop the engine mount broke and snapped the cv joint on the drivers side. The next drive the car empted
all its water all over the floor out of one of the hoses. I took it to a garage and they told me that the thermostat was knackered and the top hose was too and replaced the top hose. After that it didnt infalte again. Next drive it put all its water out all over the floor next i took it to motorsport developments where they replaced the chip because the car had begun to idel funny, tested the ecu as the fuel pump was sticking on insted of priming when the ignition was first turned on, and said there was a fault on the ecu, fitted a bleed valve as it didnt have a amel valve and changed the cap on the header tank so that it would hold its water pressure. when i picked the car up i was told that the head gasket was on its way out and would need changing and would cost me a lot of money. after leaving the car feeling sorry for itself i began to strip the car down with my mate who is a mechanic and do the head gasket. i orded a group a head gasket and all the other gaskets. the head was lightly skimmed and the engine was put back togeter. the car fired up nicely but was putting out smoke. after driving it twice the car was still ideling funny so i replaced the idel speed control valve and ended up replacing the turbo for a brand new one. shortly after the car wouldnt start for some reason and was very fuelly. i managed to get the car runing after flattening 2 batterys. i took the car down the road and after ten minites the car stalled and wasnt up for starting and there was a clicking coming from the back of the fuse box. Shortly then i was pulled by the police and told to move my car and got a producer. after twenty minutes the car started and i drove it straight down to a mechanics workshop. He couldnt find anything wrong with the car and tested the ecu and it wasnt putting out any fault codes.
So i took it home and left it till the next day. would it start. NO! I wanted to get the car sorted once and for all so i took it to a recommended RS specialinst in morcombe. this guy got the car runing and removed my chip and told me that there was loads fuel in the sump and the chip was making the car run funny. All the way home the car was over boosting and not running very well on tickover. Next day went to start it and it woulnt run. I took the car back down to him and after two weeks, removing my alarm and immobiliser, told me that my car would never run again and to set fire to it as the loom and ecu was knackered.
this left me devastated and wondered how my pride and joy had ended up like this afer 6 times of driving carfully. I then contacted my mate and he said he could get it running. He put some new plugs in it and it fired up straight away. the plugs that were removed from the car were BR9eg (Rusty NGK motorcycle plugs). Coil packs were then replaced as it's sparks were weak. My mate noticed that where the ecu mounts inside the foot well on a metal plate was shorting the ecu out where the chip used to be plugged and he monted it properly. This cost me £200. that got the car home and it was running fine for two days. then broke down on me on the way into a rs show blocking the entrance. the last thing to try was changing the fuse box. this was done and it runs to a degree at the moment. it starts up but is overfuelling at the moment putting flames out and failing to tick over. and i dont trust driving it as it might brake down.
i have run out of ideas with my car. It stands me at £15,000+ and still doesnt run. the car is immaculate and has been really looked after over the past years. it has only done 59000 miles and shold be running. please if anyone can help me by giving some advice or letting me know of a person i can take it too that will tell me the gods honest truth what is wrong with it without trying to replace everything and it still not running.
I am prepared to travel and will be interested in selling the car as it is and taking a loss. it seems such a waste to see such a nice car sat in my driveway collecting bird crap and sap off the trees.
PLEASE IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME LET ME KNOW OR PM ME.
THANKS
And sorry for boring you with a long story

so is the chip now been removed as surely the car would of been set up with that chip
when the chip isnt in there the car will run rough as its gone back to standard settings
overfuelling could be the map sensor knackered aswell
sorry you have this trouble but will be worth more running that not

Looks like your having a bit of a rough time with it there mate!!! Motorsort Developments are pretty good at what they do. I would take it back there and tell them exactly what you have written up there (that will help them diagnose it).
I assume all parts fitted where new parts?

I know how you feel mate, i was nearly pulling my hair out with my Red Escos a few years back, went through a couple of months of problem after problem, all small, but they all made it one big problem.
Persevere with it mate, Turbosystems in Stoke in Trent were who fixed mine for me and it was spot on ever after.

I would get it checked again mate, i know you've had nothing but hassle, but you can't expect to get much for it if it doesn't run properly. Must be something simple like a crank sensor or something like that, sounds like you eliminated just about everything else.. .. Good luck anyway.

Dose it still have the multiplugs for the engine loom on the N/S inner wing in between the header tank and the power steering tank?
If so i think these need to go. I've been having nothing but running problems with mine for the last month or so (see my post in the Escort cosworth room) and these are next to go.
Good luck M8.

i thought if you just unplugged the ecu chip out of the side of the ecu and put the standard actuator on and turned down the boost it will put the engine to standard settings. ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS
ANY PICS OF MAP SENSOR SO I CAN TRY A NEW ONE

the map sensor is located on passenger inner wing nxt to inlet
its upside down
lamda sensors arnt that expensive proberbly 20 quid
it all depends on whats been done when the chip was fitted, i.e timing adjusted, fuel, emissions etc
so just pulling the chip out could affect the running of it as th esettings may have been changed
does look like a nice car wish i could get enough money for one

OVER FUELLING
I STARTED THE CAR UP BEFORE AND IT RUNS BUT PUTS OUT ALOT OF BLACK SMOKE AND SMELLS FUELLY. THE CAR IS ALRITE WHEN ITS REVED UP BUT JUST SEEMS TO GET FUELLED UP EASILY ON TICK OVER. AND IF YOU LEAVE IT TO TICK OVER AND GO TO REV IT UP IT RUNS ON 3 TILL IT CLEARS OUT.

Pete's number's in his signiture above and paul's is around somewhere if you look through some of the traders posts on here. They are dead easy to fit. My gran could probably do it. The lamba sensor is located just behind the turbo, it screws into the exhaust and you'll need a spanner to undo it. It has a wire which if you follow it eventally comes to a multiplug behind the head. somewhere. simply unclip it and replace with new one

Just been reading through this thread again with interest,
MATE if you still have the car, all this talk of black smoke, and rough running, and overfuelling smell etc, smells VERY VERY VERY much like the problem i had with mine.
It took me months to figure out, but i eventually traced it to the MAP Sensor. Water had been sitting on the map sensor bracket, and eventually ingressing into the map sensor itself making it go faulty. When they do go faulty and short, they cause the car to overfuel MADLY as its either at 0v or 5v i cant remember which, but either way thats making the car think its on boost, so it chucks in fuel accordingly to compensate, so my car would run rough as a bag of nails, chuck out black smoke, cough, splutter, wouldnt rev up, then would eventually die.
I changed the map sensor, just thinking it was "faulty" the first time, on the advice of Tony at Turbosystems. He said it was 99% a map sensor prob, just by diagnosing over the phone. It happened again a few weeks later, and it took me the THIRD attempt, and 3 faulty map sensors lol to find out that the rain water running down in the vent, and onto the bracket was shorting the sensor, fooking it, and hence causing my problem.
It sounds VERY much like this is your problem mate.
I changed my Lambda sensor too, although it made sod all difference. Expensive buggers they are too....
If i were you, i would find out what MAP Sensor you have, (they are colour coded) but if your chipped then i would assume its a 3Bar map sensor, so try and get a loan of a good one from a mate, or anywhere, and swap them out to test. Its located on the pass side inner wing, upside down on a triangley bracket. with a multiplug and a vacuum hose going into it....
Swap it, let the car start, let it burn off any excess fuel, take it for a spin and see how it is. Each and every time i fitted a new one my car was spot on, until i eventually realised that the car went to shit every morning after the night before when it had been raining LOL and i eventually put 2 and 2 together why i was munching through MAP Sensors lol.
Seriously mate, give it a try, i am 90%sure this could be your exact prob based on my experience and Turbosystems advice. I could of course be wrong, but for the sake of 5 mins to test it, its worth a try.
You sould of course also have a 2.5 Bar MAP Sensor, which are temperamental, so better off to get a 3 Bar if you do.
Hope this is of some help, i know how soul destroying it is having to deal with it each and every day and not be able to enjoy it.
Let me know how you get on please
Cheers

you hear this kinda story all the time on here..
i say the same every time...
take it to a PRO and by this i dont mean a so called PRO...
there are plenty of well rated tuners on here that may charge a wee bit extra over your normal garage but it would save ALOT of hassle in the long run...
stop messing about and get your minted escort back on the road running as it should
