problem replacing a mondeo engine

My 1.8 zetec 03 mondeo needed a replacement engine because it was burning oil, so I found a garage that would do the job and got a replacement from a breaker. I gave the breaker the reg number and VIN for my car so they could get me an engine that was a direct swap. The breaker sent the engine, which was in good order and reasonable mileage, they gave me a 3 month warranty on it.
Anyway, the garage fitted the engine but couldn't get it to run. They're saying it's an incompatible engine for my car. The breaker is saying they've messed up the fitting.
So, what I need to know is who's right? The engine number for my original engine is CHBA3E44801 the engine from the breakers is CHBA2M80174.
From the engine numbers, can anyone confirm whether the replacement engine is a direct swap or not?

It won't be a incompatible engine so long as everything plugs in ok etc, the problem if any with compatability would be in the ecu and ignition key(chip).
Check to see if it's something silly like the fuel pump has tripped, in the kick panel, just press button down if it has, the garage doing don't sound much cop, have they checked to see whether it is a fuel or ignition problem or not, it's usually one of these missing.

The garage is adamant they've double checked everything (I've been in this game 20 years and we wouldn't have done anything stupid was the response) and are even trying to charge me an extra Ł100 for an auto electrician, even though they've not got the thing running yet.
I have seen postings relating to the ECU and key chips needing to be re-paired for the imobiliser if the ECU is changed, but the've not changed the ECU, it's still the original one so it will still be paired with the key.
They did say the auto electrician has said the engine will only run with the ECU that was in the scrapped car the replacement engine came from. But I don't see how this can be the case, are all the ECUs and engines totally unique? Surely the replacement engine will run with the original ECU unless there's some fundamental difference between the two engines?
From what I've been able to piece together from various places, the two engines I have, given the engine numbers, are pretty much the same and only manufactured about 5 months apart. I could just do with someone being able to confirm this and that the replacement engine will work with the original ECU in the car.

There is nothing on the 03 mondy that I can think of that would need coding to the engine, but I will check, so as you say it should make no difference what ecu it has, diesels are another matter as pumps can be coded.
At the end of the day they took the job on, so have got a cheek to even think about charging as they haven't done what was agreed, unless you told them it doesn't have to run, , let me do some checking and I'll get back to you, I'll ask me mate as does does ford warranty work in essex on the lecky side of things.

How do I find out if the injectors are coded to the ecu? One of the things the garage has said would work is if they swapped the head over from the old engine to the replacement one, but
a) they want to charge me an EXTRA Ł550 to do that
b) i don't want them swapping bits of the engine about and charging me Ł550 if they've just done something daft
c) if the oil burning problem was from a valve seal rather than a piston ring then they'll be bringing that problem with it - the old engine also had a little end knock as well so that's why I didn't just get the valve seals looked at.
So, if it is the injectors that's the issue, just getting them to swap those over would be a better solution. But, there's no point even doing that if they don't need to cos it'll make no difference.

Thanks guys. The more info I find out, the more it looks like the garage have ballsed up the fitting. Now it's just a matter of getting "I've been in this game 20 years, you trying to tell me my job??" garage bloke to accept it and sort it out without butchering the engine(s) or charhing me over the odds for stuff that doesn't need doing...

hi all can any one tell me if a mk3 mondeo engine 1.8 peterol is interchangeable between years for E.G i have a mondeo mk3 2001 manual 1.8 duratec petrol. can i put a 56plate 1.8 duratec as the replacement
