Did you prime the oil pump before chucking it in?

If its been sitting dry for a while it will take a fair while to self-prime through cranking (which isn't good for the bearings etc)

Engine came with oil in it so assumed it was OK was told it was quite running but did change oil and filter oil in it was well over top mark on dipstick and no sign of oil in head so was suspicious.

Coming with oil in it means nothing. Could have sat for 20yrs with oil in the sump for all anyone knows.
Sounds like the pumps dry. Its hassle but i'd whip it off and prime it or if you wanna chance it, keep cranking with plugs etc out till you hopefully see pressure (will probably need a jump pack across the battery otherwise you'll kill off that - oh and try not to burn out the starter too)

I had this trouble just yesterday. I filled the oil pump via the pressure relief valve, turned it over with the plugs out and within 5 seconds it was pumping. I had a moment of panick thinking the worst. its fiddly but not too bad to pour some oil into the pump in situ

I'll try that before I drop the sump . I was told that it hadn't been run for 8 months back in April when I bought it but it had no sign of any oil in the cam or rockers was dry as a bone should have had some sign of oil.

If you can't get oil pressure after priming the pump, the pick up could be blocked or something worse. Or you might just have to start it for a couple of seconds.

Or pull it round the block with the plugs out, just keep letting the clutch out with ignition on... Hopefully light will go out?
