Cortina MK1 YB
Hi, I have a problem I hope someone can help with.
Firstly I am no mechanic I am more bodywork but…..I am just finishing my current project which is a MK1 Cortina with a YB. I purchased the engine, loom & ECU in bits and have put it together following reading sites like this.
So I have come to point where I try and get her started and after a couple of issues I have fuel, a spark and an engine that fires but will not start (sounds like the timing is 180 out), After checking the timing belt and refitting the distributer she fired up and ran (but not very smooth).
On inspection I had not connected the phase sensor. When I plugged it in it would not start. So my problem is I have a car that won’t start with the phase sensor connected bit will without. Can anybody offer any advice?

start
put a new phase sensor on it-check its fitted correctly
also if fitted to another car check all required earth connections and the engine harness itself is good-as you are probably aware a lot of cossie owners have replaced the harness with new type, they get a hammering with heat and age
also make sure you have the correct tps for whichever ecu you are using..

Thanks for that, I have a new sensor fitted but still no joy. The harness has been stripped and loomed in with the car loom so I have had a chance to look at it as I taped it up. As I got the engine , ECU and loom in a box I have to say I don't if they all came out of the same car? could that have an effect, I take it they are not all wire the same?
Thanks again for reply.

difference
you can switch all the ecu around-with main difference being the tps/wiring has to match-the green labelL8 ecu is also for unleaded lambda control iirc
is everything connected-tps,coolant temp sens, ait, map, crank sens[gapped correct too]
sensors are so cheap nowadays i would pop a full set of new ones on in any case
what ecu do you have-and is the fitted chip correct for the injector size-that would maybe be a good start lol

Read this site
www.bigturbo.co.uk
This will give you a better understanding of the system. make sure you have crank and phase sensors plugged into there correct plugs.
Pf09 Throttle sensor goes with L8 and P8 ecus
Pf01 goes with L1 and L6.

Thanks a lot for the link it make interesting reading (not that I understood everything).
So it looks as if I have a level 8 ECU WD48.08 IAW048/01 but a loom suited to a level 6. Which if I understand it correctly means I need to adjust the wiring to the TPS.
In addition I basically don’t have all the part the ECU could drive so there are unused pins, air con pins 21,12, knock pins 22, 6 Octane pins 13, 14 and Canister Purge pin 7.
Is it possible that the TPS wiring could cause the fault? I did fit new phase, crank, ECT & ACT, AMAL and MAP sensors before I fitted the engine.
Thanks again for the responses it’s a big help.

I have no knock sensor so the pins are not used, also a new battery that's been on charge all night.
I have swapped the wires but still no joy. Walked away for today will try again tomorrow.
can't help thinking I have made an error somewhere and I am going to feel very silly when I find it. This is the first time I have played with turbo's and ECU so its good to learn. Thanks for the suggestions.

Ensure you have good ground to inlet manifold and engine to chassis and battery.
