sounds like a faulty release switch or a broken wire/bad connection somewhere.
I know the mk3 Mondeo used to suffer with this issue, possibly the same type of switch so similiar problem?

As above, sounds like the boot release switch has failed, quite common - to replace it, the interior boot trim needs removing, then there are 4 10mm nuts that remove the boot handle, then the switch can be replaced.
From memory the switch is about £25 from Ford.

thanks for the help guys , I was thinking along the lines of a faulty boot switch myself as pulling the handle does nothing yet the boot opens when you press the boot release switch on the key
