Default Try not to laugh!!

I passed my test only a few months ago and was driving to work in my 98 1.6 Zetec Escort and was going about 50 and downshifting from 5th aiming for 4th, and I'm pretty sure I almost did or did put it in reverse , Im not sure I fully lifted up the clutch because a really bad screeching noise came from the car and I put it straight back in 5th .

But ever since then I've noticed when I put my foot all the way down to accelerate in 3rd,4th or 5th it will rev really loudly for a couple of seconds and I wont gain much more speed then I will shoot foward like the revs are being stuck for a while then Im getting all my power, but it doesn't rev as loudly if im normally accelerating, I was just wondering if you guys would be able to tell from experience if it's probably fine or if I've probably ruined my clutch/gearbox.

The car is still running fine and going into gears with no problem other than the loud revving.

It's classic signs of clutch slip, engine revs rising but road speed...not!

Try putting car in 3rd gear (stationary) with handbrake on, let the clutch up with a few revs on, if it's slipping badly it will not stall.

If the clutch is ok, it will/should stall.

Thanks for the feedback guys, To be honest I probably must have hit reverse in it and taken quite a bit of life out of my clutch which is probably old anyway so now its started slipping even more, I noticed whenever I pulled off after I bought the car that it would wheelspin a little bit, I'm more than okay if it's the clutch but I just hope I didnt cause any gearbox problems.

Just tried this and it would not stall with some revs applied and pulling the clutch up with the handbrake on then I tried it with the handbrake off and it slowly moved foward coming off the clutch then stalled when I took the revs off.

But since I tried it on a short road just outside my house when I was pulling up slowly so I was rolling in 1st without using the accelerator getting ready to slow down when I put my foot on the clutch so it doesnt stall at the lower speed the engine noise/revs get louder, I'm guessing that's the clutch on the way out?
