Hi

I have a 1988 Sapphire RS Cosworth whose tachometer has stopped working. Over the last number of weeks it has being working intermittently but has now stopped altogether.
Can anybody please tell me where the pickup point on the engine is located for it so I can check to see if it has come loose.

Hi

Have checked connections on green ignition coil lead and they appear to be ok. It looks like the problem must be with the actual tachometer unit in the instrument console. How much of the dashboard do you need to remove to get at the tachometer and is it a difficult job to do?. Am just a bit worried that I might crack/damage the dashboard as the plastic it is constructed of does not appear to be all that strong.

steering couling plastics need removing 4 screws,and then the dash trim another 4 screws and then you'll have to remove the secrews that hold the clocks into place once removed you'll have to pull clocks slightly forward so you can release the speedo cable and there is also plug on wire the pulls off! as far as I can remember!

Very easy job to do, if you push the speedo cable through the bulkhead a bit from engine side towards clocks it is a bit easier.
Reach behind the clocks and feel for the lugs around the cable ends, squeeze these together and the cable will pop off easier.
The plastic is fairly robust and doesn't break that easy, apart from the top cover around the hazzard light switch, if this is overtightened the plastic is crap and will break.

ebay always has a few, I was promised one by someone on here only to be let down, even though I was happy to pay what he asked, same as the wiper motors I was promised by another!!
I know there was a brand new old stock one going for around £130, which frankly is taking the piss, I'm replacing mine with Smiths Telemetrix or Prism ones, as ford ones not too hot on the quality front anyway.
Any 4 cyl one will fit and work correct, 6 cyls can be used but need calibrating, around £60.

Just to add my 5p...

My rev counter did the same, and would only work when it felt like it.

I stuck a spare set of clocks in, which worked perfectly. Tabetha tested my original clocks, and the rev counter worked fine.

Go fish.

When you take them out, all I'll says is don't lose any screws.

Thanks. Reckon my best bet is to take it out and have it tested before I buy a replacement .
