Zetec Turbo Cabriolet
Where do I start? Well my car started life as a mk4 escort Cabriolet xr3i. Not a bad car but not much fun to be had really
So what can we do about that? Turbo it would be a good start I guess! Good old efi cvh is perfect for a straight in fit with little fuss.
Just had to mod the xr loom a little bit, job done. Now the thing is, I like to do things as cost effective as I can and learn by my mistakes. So.... intercooler ......... £40 off fleabay, universal fit, had it on my Saab 95 aero so no point wasting it.
sort out the charge carrier.................
Bit of hard pipe..........
And she was a gooden for a while untill .......................
.................................................. ..................................
.................................................. .................................
D'OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What to do now then? Suppose I should try and do one of those Zetec turbo things that everyone is doing, although it does look expensive. Wonder if I can do it on the cheap side and make it work? Only one way to find out............................................... ....
We need a shopping list-
1x Zetec block
1x Modified zetec head
1x Modified engine mount
1x drilled cvh flywheel
4x suitable pistons
1x new turbo as mine was looking tired
4x Higher flow injectors as Im keeping standard Fiesta management (Please everyone tell me how wrong this is and it wont work and it will blow up and it wont run and im stupid and wasting my money )
And 1x Modified cvh inlet.
So first up, pistons. we'v got forged zetec ones, 20let, or Pulsar ones. Not for me, a mate had some out of a ZX Nissan Bluebird!! should be interesting. Bit of machining to block and rods and it looked good. Im sure the zetec conversion has been covered on here may times before so I wont bore you with the details as I dont have any pics of the build. Its simple as drilling oil return and breathers in block, drill and tap head for exhaust manifold (cvh) and inlet (cvh. Inlet had some welding done on it as well to block off water temp sensor hole) welding new enging mount, and opening up holes in flywheel. Easy really.
So now we get a bay looking like this
Radiator top hose is from a mk 5 escort zetec, and has a boss for a fan switch in it. Result.
New stage 3 turbo
Cam cover drilled for studs so charge carrier dont pop off
Walbro 255 fuel pump for the future
Injectors are 260cc Audi items (same sort of flow as beiges)
That was about it ......................
She was ready to rock and roll!!!!!!!
I'll let everyone get over the shock of this and await all comments, replys, slaggings off, laughs, head scratches, and being told it wont last long.
Then I'll dig out pics of the 4 pot hi-spec front brakes, Cossie rear brakes, koni's, gauges, heat wrapped exhaust ect
