Cool Escort XR3 Duratec Project - many doubts!

Mates,

I'm Brazilian, I own a Escort XR3 1986 (which is pretty similar to yours Escort XR3 1982) it comes with a carburator based CHT engine (similar to CVH) 86 hp powered by ethanol (Brazilian alternative petro - alcholhol based).

Here is the car when I bought last year:

My project is tuning up its mechanic (suspension / brakes / engine) and combining with an structure reinforcement, full restoration and some Eurostyle elements (which are rare around here).

Nowadays it's stopped, I'm restoring everything I can at home and slowly buying all of the new parts. Nowadays:

And that's the new heart:

That's a brand new in box Ford Duratec 2.0 16v engine, comes almost complete (except from a few parts such as alternator and radiator)

For the brakes at the moment I got:

Escort XR3i MK5 rear disk brakes set

Wilwood 4 pot Dynalite Pro Lug mount and pads

For the interior I have a lot of new parts, but the ones I like most are:

Recaro seats

Euro Escort XR/RS front spots (Brazilian ones are smaller)

Inox muffler:

Brazilian original fogs with caps

Just love this one, RS 3 spoke

Ford Racing Gauges (I'm waiting for the others to arrive)

I'm just showing the whole picture, but I have many doubts that I think you guys can help me, around here there are just a few people that would know about this engine.

I intend to turbocharge this engine, I'm not the one who are after just high horsepower rates, I love everything tuned, perfectly working. So I'd like only 0.8 Kg for the turbo, kind of low pressure.

If you guys have any suggestions on which turbocharger to use in this engine would help.

How can I know if this Duratec is UK type or US type?

Also, I'd love to turn this 2WD into a 4WD, but here in Brazil there is no Sierra 4WD, my best option would be Subaru Impeza's 4WD system... Do you think it can match? I don't really know much about 4WD systems, so I wouldn't even know witch gear to use, because I'd like to use the Focus gear (IB5).

Many doubts mates, these ones are just the beginning! I'm LOST! Hehehe!!

Thanks

Cauê

The car body isn't bad, but I want it be fully restored, no rusts no dents.

Yes mate, me nether, but who knows? If this 4WD idea is not way too hard I may be one with a Duratec 4WD, hehehe!

Thanks

I like everything you have suggested for your car apart from the rear exhaust, will be silly loud and look out of place in my opinion. Much more suited to jap crap

Mate, I see what you meant... The piece itself seems too big, but it is not. As you I don´t like japanese tuning style. Here´s a few pics of the muffler together the car:

I imported it from the U.S, I couldn´t really know if it would be good in my car... I was a bit worried if it would be too big, but when I got it I didn´t think it´s too big. I liked and look forward seeing it installed.

Does anyone know what´s the name / maker / type of the dump valve of this MK3:

I loved this sneeze, I´ve never heard of one of these here in Brazil.

Thanks

Youll need your xr3 to be turbocharged before you can fit a dump valve mate. that rs 1600 souds like turbo chatter rather than a dump valve

All right, that´s cool, thanks for "turbo chatter" info! I´ve google´d it and undestood, I didn´t know about it.

My first doubt solved, thanks mate.

Another thing I´d like to know is how do I differ Duratec US from UK... Because in a soon future I wish to buy a Samco coolant set for my Duratec, but there are 3 versions (US / UK / RS).

Thanks

what is ur engine out of. surley when u bought it it siad for example "2.0 duratec HE Cmax". sorry i dont know the differance. possible like the zetecs the US ones have a longer stroke. :S
you will need to get a bispoke hose set tho surely as ur air box will be in a differant place, i assume ur plumbing it into the mk3 radiator, no power steering

Thanks for the comments, mates, I really appreciate! Doing what I´m intending to do is a bit rare around here, even more something similar to what you guys use to see there in Europe! Eurostyle is the main inspiration for my project.

m4tt274,

The only thing in my note regarding the engine is the number 5405... Maybe it means something, but I don´t know...

About the Samco hoses, I have no idea yet where the radiator will be... But I´m surely not using the MK3´s one, I´d like to get that twin cooled radiator, another thing that I don´t know if I can get here.

Thanks

Luke,

Thanks for the comments! At least turbocharging it shouldn't be a problem here, I just like to be sure my engine's model because of Samco coolant sets.

ZVH,RST,

Here is a little about the Brazilian MK3 XR3 engine (CHT): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CHT_engine

The exhaust manifold is right under the inlet one, in a curious way in my view, they are almost together, almost seems like they are only one.

Another question, I'm really not into 4WD, so I'd like to know if I got for example a Subaru 4WD system I must use Subaru's gear, right? I couldn't use Focus' gear right?

Besides it all I'd like to wish you all mates a Great New Year!

Thanks
