Escort 1998 TDi (smokey when cold)
Hi just looking for abit of advise on an escort Tdi i have been working on. Basically it is smokey on start up and until its warmed up, once its warmed up the smoke clears. Looking for ideas on problems...
1. Do these cars have temp sensor that control the mixture from cold?
2. Is it worth changing the thermostat? Car never really get off cold.
The car has had a recent oil and filter change
Thanks Graeme

if you suspect the thermostat to be stuck open then change it.but anywhere in the 'norm' section on the dial is ford covering their arses as they couldnt get 2 temp sensors to read the same.im guessing the old 1.8 td will have done a few miles now so its maybe bore wear,or maybe the pump timing is out or worn,or the pump has been opened up,this causes them to smoke.or the stem seals may be hard.put some of that redex stuff in the tank then take it out and toast it.that might help.

The best thing you can do first is treat it to some MILLERS diesel engine/fuel system treatment, thus stuff really does work wonders, then start using bio, the smoke can be caused by many things, dirty air filter is usual.
The belt/s if needing doing are a doddle, there are 2, 1 is the main cam belt, the 2nd is the injector pump belt, ALWAYS change both, have seen many where only cam belt was changed, but when pump belt breaks it has nowhere to go apart from getting tangled in the cam belt and causing lots of ŁŁŁ's damage, they can be changed and the cam and pump timing done using nothing more than drill bits as dowels to locate the positions.
How is the heater ?, should be extremely good, if not chances are the stat needs doing, get the hottest running stat you can get in there.
Very important you thrash the arse of it every once in a while, what colour is the smoke ?

colour is the smoke? blue or black? does it start on the button or wind a bit? Pos air leak in the fuel system will make it blue, usualy i time the injection pumps "by ear" with the car running, would really need to show you how its done as its not the easiest to explain.

a bit of smoke on start up on the old 1.8 diesel or td enginies is common
it should be a grey-black colour. this will clear once the engine has warmed up.
timing the pump is simple enough by using a 4.5mm allen key or drill bit to insert into the small hole at the top of the pulley once its set at TDC. you could if you wanted adavance the pump timing 5-10degrees, sometimes it helps it rev better.
ive done a bit of guide here http://www.eodc.co.uk/forums/index.p...de-and-tuning/
blue smoke on start up indicates that theres piston ring wear, blue smoke on boost means the turbo seals are shot, loads of black smoke means it over fueling or the turbo isnt boosting .
as lomg as the temp is sitting between N and M on the gauge youll be fine. like siad above, no 2 thermostats are the same.

the smoke is grey mate and its a bit lumpy on idle, plus it is a bit of a bastard to start, you have to rev it as if you have to clear it once it has started. The smoke does clear when driven. Thanks for the reply

2nd that. Check pipes to and from your filter housing and pump
A bit of grey smoke is common on startup tbh.
Mine is a tdi with 115'000 on it and itll start after a couple cranks and run lumpy for a minute or 2 and smokes grey until warm. I always, when possible, run it for about 5 before taking it out.
