m3-rust,subframe[boot floor] head gaskets,vanos issues,smg pumps[if smg obviously],tired suspension,costly front discs,worn interiors+more,great to drive though
saphs-probably everything but if you bought a decent one to start with a tad cheaper to repair mechanically than the m3,although rs tax on some trim parts
on the 4x4 i always thought the engine was a bit of a pain to remove compared to the 2wd..other than that really really easy to work on

Well I came in here with 2 cars in mind and as for the m3 vids on YouTube about floor, subframe etc that's put me right off! I'm gona swirl them, could afford to pay out the get it all put right if gone wrong !
I'm kinda swaying to the frs mk1,
Saph cos has still got my attention tho!

I'd seriously do your reasearch first before putting cash down on an m3, search all the forums, m3cutters is a good place, enquire about rust and bottom ends, and any other general foibles, make your decision on the SMG box too as it'll be another factor to decide, 10k would buy you a middle of the road car, so bear that in mind.
An m5 in e39 guise for 10k will not be mint, 8k a few years a go would buy you a high miler I can only imagine now that the prices will be on the up.
I had this issue a few months back and as I already said I was put off, you could buy one for 10k and enjoy it for 10 years as a weekend car and it cost you nothing, i decided not to take the gamble, but let actual owners experiences make your decisions than people's opinions.
You could buy a ropeyish rs4 b5 or b6 for 10k you'd probably get a middle of the road RS6 too but then again it has a potential to throw a big bill at you, with the rs6 though, if it's had a recon gearbox and coilovers fitted then you've got a pretty solid car, sound fucking awesome too with a set of pipes, it'll also never loose money as they are probably at there lowest in terms of price now.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Its old school technology compared to a Focus RS or M3 and both of those are of course much more refined and easy to drive.
For pure performance and fun though it still takes some beating!!!

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
How about the focus st? Friend at work had one and must admit I really liked it even in the bright orange he had, looked and drove great.

My business partner has a focus st. He has spent in excess of 26k on it and running 450 whp, all built by AS and maps by devil developments, it's a weapon but he has taken he fun out of it for me, plus the prices are never gona hold! They must have dropped 2-3k in the last year n half

It Wasnt Me!
Sapphire cosworth 1988 - 1994/5
BMW M3 E46 2000 - 2006
I'd say your more likely to find a nicer M3, as said above as a daily the M3, as a toy...cossie! plus, the cossie is easier to make faster.

I'm Finding My Feet Here Now
i have been through many cars.. and will get abuse for this.. but the mk1 focus is bloody boring.. dont look all that..as in if someone was to see one on the road.. it dont look much better than a st170.. unless you know what a mk1 rs actually is..some people dont. . they know what a mk2 is..the mk1 aint obvious enough ..now the m3.. is proper class! Everyone who will see a m3 knows what it is.. a proper machine.. i have has old fords etc.. they are good fun for a sunday.. but a bmw is a proper tough german refined car.. my m3 has never let me down. . infact its so good that i am getting bored and looking for a cossie.. but when i drive the m3 daily it just makes me think why take all the hassle with something that wont be reliable.. im finding it a very hard car to replace..it keeps coming back to the m3 for me.. as its a quick car, comfy, looks the part, gets attention ..roof down in summer.. its fun..and yet drives amazing..properly built.. smooth..can be driven in anger.. plenty sideways..donuts..when you get bored..mines FSH and never let me down.. i drive it very hard every day.. its just a damn good car! if i was in your shoes..id go for a m3 and never look back.. dont let the subframe issue put you off.. every car has its common faults.. it aint just the m3 that the subframe cracks on.. its every e46 model that it can happen to mate.. even diesels! Mines is perfect.. and on a 03 plate. my mates with m3s cant fault theres either and wished they has bought one a long time ago!

That's the plan pal! I want to have a test drive of a few before I pay out that kind of money! I've always been a fan of front wheel drive rather than rear! Feel more comfortable my bmw has caught me out a few times and that was squeaky bum time
