Default IB5 gearbox noise

.

Has anyone every had this or give me an idea of the reason before I pull the box back out.

Just fitted an IB5 box with ERST S2 LSD that I fitted myself, everything is fine all gears etc, but when in 5th gear at lowish revs I have a nasty grinding noise but only under load.

I know the box was fine before fitting the LSD as it came out of a car I drove.

Any help or ideas would be useful

Cheers

Ginger

Did you replace the diff bearings? When I rebuilt an ib5 with an rs diff I noticed one of the bearings was a different size, iirc it was the bearing at the speedo drive side was either bigger or smaller.

Shit, no, I didn't want to damage them trying to remove them so left the BC on the LSD, that might be why the speedo isn't working.

Bollox.

Did you replace the crown wheel? I only used the bare diff I swapped the crown wheel as its different to the rs turbo and I think the speedo drive is different aswell.

Yer, just the bare diff mate. I'll have to pull it out a take it apart, I still have the original open diff in the garage anyway, hope it hasn't damaged anything, only done a few miles so might be lucky.

Hopefully it's alright mate I got one bearing from ford and one bearing from Eriks bearings. You won't be able to remove and re-use the bearings dude to the fragile plastic outer race, you just need to get the numbers off the original ib5 bearings and order two of them. Like I say one is the same as the rs turbo the other is different.

I also replaced the neutral return Spring it made a huge difference, I got it from ford and cost only a few quid.

On the escort turbo box the bearing preload is shimed instead of the spring dished washers that the lesser models have you need to measure the clearence and then fit shims to take up clearence and apply slight preload
All in the workshop manual
Good luck Tim.

Default Gearbox rebuild

Hi I have just started the rebuild of My gearbox suspected diff bearings sso fitting all new bearings. However when I have pressed the diff bearing carrier into the gearbox casing the side with the diaghphram washers when pressed in I can rotate it by hand, The manual says that you should tap the casing to hold this in place.

I have been told that this part should not spin is this correct if not what do the diaghphram washers do ?.

Or do I need to find another casing, the opposite carrier is firmly into the gearbox casing (drivers side of box) its the passenger side casing that appears to be the problem desperat to get it done cars been stood since October 2016

Default Gearbox diff bearings

Hi
I am fairly sure what you have described is correct
The bearing on the side with the dished preload washers is a sliding fit in the casing
Once the bearing is fitted I think the top edge of bearing housing is peened slightly just to stop the bearing falling out as you lower the casing into place
on final assembly

All the best Tim

Hi Tim My box is an RST box which has the dished washers not shims L8 bolt LSD fitted its the side that the dished washers are on which I can turn an RS turbo specialist said it shouldnt move. My thoughts were it must move as the dished washers are called a diahphram in the manual
