Default Would you trust banded steels

Im going to get a second set of tyres for my Cortina when racing at pod, im currently using avon cr500's which are getting very hard to find so don't want to turn them into smoke racing, my plan was to get a set of drag slicks one to save my road tyres and to also help gearing.

Now I need some rims to put these tyres on im running 9x15 with a 0et which are special order so no chance of finding any second hand, so have been looking at banded steels.

Now would you trust them with high grip tyres and 390bhp.

Couple of my mates have been running them on old skool fords for a couple of years and never had any issues with them. If they are done properly they should be just as strong as a normal wheel

Welded properly they should be fine, have a look at inside rim of some standard steel wheels there not even welded all the way round!

Done properly they are fine, I just hate the stupid stretched tire / camber look.

These are half a mile up the road from me, They have been selling them to the trade for years and will now deal direct with the public.

you cant seriously compare an oe wheel thats had years of development and rigorous safety testing to a wheel thats been chopped and widened by someone in a workshop? how much testing do the banded wheels go through before a tyre is stuck on it and its on the road?

there will be some banded steels that will be done to a high standard, but personally i wouldn't risk it. all it takes is one hairline crack in the weld or one bit of hard brittle metal, you clip a pothole or bump and it cracks or splits.

They'll be fine provided the welding is good. As above, go to someone who has a good reputation and you'll be ok.

I believe so they have now gone to a ZZS tyre as a new replacement, seams the stock of CR500's has sold out before they have released the ZZS.

The 245 40 15 ZZS is due for release Q3 2015 but no sign of it yet, only takes a 6 month delay and your screwed if you need any.

The tyre was made specially for Caterham and they have been sold out on there parts web site for at least the last 12 months and still are.
