Default would pedal be softer after changing to rear discs?

i have just had a conversion done on the rear axle of the xr2 so i now run focus stub axles, handbrake, discs and calipers.

i run a wilwood bias pedal box and before fitting the rear discs the pedal was very solid, but now with the rear discs the pedal is alot softer, i have bled the brakes twice (with air pressure system) but still has alot more pedal travel before they bite, is this due to havin a bigger piston to move in the caliper than the old drum cyclinder

thanks
marc

Yes, the calipers require more fluid movement than the old cylinders. Try fitting a bigger diameter master cylinder.

One small thing though. Are the rear pads/discs fully bedded in yet. Might be worth living with the pedal for a while see if after 200m or so it gets much better. And check all your vac lines just in case.

The bigger pistons in the rear calipers will make the pedal softer as you mentioned

I had the same problem when I did a RS2000 conversion on my Si. It actually failed the MOT on efficiency on the rears. I had to get a new master cylinder which was a bitch to track down but got a ATE one from Euro Car Parts. Was spot on after that.

The largests bore master cylinder is 25mm and is found on a S2 turbo escort it only has 2 outlets front and rear.

I had to use one of these on my cortina with mondeo cals on front and sierra cos on rear

Worked really well after

Mark, as above running the same kinda system on the Westy. Move to the next size up master cylinder. Your probably on a .62 at a guess? Try a .75
