You mean a higher ratio if you want to lower the revs while crusing.
I've never come across longer 5th gear they do make shorter ones John Reed sells them.
The only thing you could do would be to change the ratio in your diff to a taller one although that will effect all gears and not just 5th obviously.
I take you are running a standard 3.64 ratio in your diff at the moment?

you will struggle to find a 5th gear altogether. mine was damaged getting it off. it took ages to find a replacement.

Hi mate... Thanks,yeah,standard 3.64
I thought the 20litre glsi saphire used a longer 5th that's what made me wonder if I could do something with my cossie.
What are the shorter ones used for?

had it fully rebuilt. my fith gear was on there! broke pulleys and all sorts trying to get it off when it was cherry red too. I believe a jeep also used the t5 but the tail housing was in a different format. worth seeing it you can download a manual to check the ratio and to see if it is similar. that was the next step if I could find another fith gear.

What sort of revs are you doing and at what cruising speed on a long journey in 5th ? 3500 rpm in 5th should be pretty fast, what are you hoping you can achieve ? Are you sure your T5 box has not got the close ratio gears fitted to it?

3500rpm is 75/80mph
Be nice to sit 85/90 at 3500rpm

That does seem slow compared to my 2wd but of course it also depends on what power you are running. With the traffic and unmarked Police cars its not in reality that easy to cruise at 85-90mph!!

For Future reference.

I thought the same thing.
Since the cossie is now officialy a car to mostly cruise with the family, I decided to try to get a longer 5th gear to drop the revs.
I bought a .68 5th gear from a mustang from the states that should bring the revs down to 3000 at 130km/h (80mph).
Only problem is to see if it fits the housing or if it has to be ground a bit.

I will check it out and post the results.

You will find that the splines on the output shaft for the gear is different on the Cossie T5 to all other T5s = your mustang gear does not fit your Cossie T5.
You can replace the output shaft with a mustang one, but then the yoke splines is different, so this wont work without replacing the yoke on your driveshaft.

Also, if you decide to try this on your own, beware that if you damage your gear during removal a replacement is almost impossible to source.

Well... Should have come here before I bought it .
And didn't see your reply .

Just came from the garage trying to fit it and it's a no go...

Just checked and the Jeep ones are 23 splines... Wonder if that would work?
