Default Head & Block questions

Ok people. Had the head off my sapph for a head gasket change. Now ive go a few questions.

It looks like the head has been ported. Does anyone have pics of unported intake ports?
How do I tell if it is a 4x4 head or 2wd?

Also the block has been o-ringed but is only using a fiber head gasket. Is this a normal mod or should it be running a metal gasket? I want to do a bottom end rebuild next year so it will be coming out again.

I will put pics up when I get them off my phone.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Brett

This is the only bit I can answer: the obvious thing to look for is on the exhaust side for two threaded lugs. If they're present, it's a 2wd head, and they'd be where the turbo damper bolts onto. If they're absent, it's a 4x4 head.

Thanks mate.
After a bit more searching I found ive got a late 2wd head with the 3 hole thermostat housing but early water passages and turbo damper mounts. Still need to find pics of std intake ports too!

Im still keen to hear from engine builders or experienced people about the copper o-ringed block and grpA or std gasket.

Put a picture up of your head and ports, maybe easier than trying to find a pic of standard ports

as far as im aware you use a fibre hasket with O-rings

Can't help with the porting but re the "O ring", I think you block has been "Wire rung".

This is considered old hat nowadays days, but it used to be where thin strips of wire were welded across to give a better seal, I personally would jusy fit a decent HG, like a WRC etc, another route is the YB 1261 this is a ST Escos gasket which people have had success with, it's stronger than the standard item.

Isn't the 1261 the standard 2wd gasket...?

It's the standard ST Escos gasket.
