2wd Vs 4wd

2wd Vs 4wd
Ok, more of a "to satisfy curiosity" question than anything but,
Of the 2wd and 4wd sierras, which is "better" for handling, and getting the power down?
I know the T5 box is a lot stronger than the MT-75 and transfer case, or durable anyway, but has anyone driven them both?
Which would you prefer, and why?

Back in 92 I drove quite a few of both before buying a 2wd, mainly because I found them more fun to drive. They are a lot quicker off the mark on paper and certainly feel faster when compared in standard form. If I recall correctly from the brochures the saff 2wd was fastest to 60 at around 5.6 seconds, beating even the (standard) rs500 on that score.
All were tested in the dry mind you as the wet is a differnt story! So far I've driven around 8 x 2wd and 13 x 4wd. I'm glad I picked up a decent 2wd but at the end of the day that is personal choice - as it gave me a bigger grin

Depends what your using it for and what power you want to run, and as said personal opinion
IMO
I have a 2wd and love it, havent had a 4x4 and dont really want one, not into the idea of replacing box`s every time you launch it hard, plus i enjoy getting the tail out on roundabouts, much more fun, plus if i wanted a car that handled a 4x4 cossie is the last thing on my mind

Ive got a 4x4 n it handles ok and the traction is mint. The only thing that puts me off is incase the gear box goes pop. Im running stage 2 chip 300bhp.ive been told anything over about 350/400 the gearbox wont last long.

I have 2wd saph and and escos (yes I know its not a saph)
For pure grin factor definately would go for the 2wd as it so much fun as its easy to get the rear end out, but I do love the amount of grip I get from the escos
Sod it get both

I've got a 2wd and a 4X4 Saph at the moment and they are like chalk and cheese to drive.
The 4X4 is running about 280bhp and the 2wd is around the 330bhp mark.
I love the confidence that the 4X4 gives you and I've never had any issues with transmission problems.
The 2wd on the other hand is a beast and a bit of a handful. Treat it with respect and you'll be fine.

I had a 4x4 cossie and the handling was good but it ate gearboxes for fun . 4 gearboxes in 2 years and it was only running 330 bhp .
i now have a 3dr cossie and wouldnt go back to 4x4 again . you get more fun in a 2wd and as people have said if you get the suspension right and dont boost it around corners they can handle just as well .

I drive my 4x4 daily and knowing I don't have to be "on edge" when it's wet, a little cold and possibly icy means I can have some fun without fear of loosing it.
The 2wd is driven regularly too in all weathers, just have to be more careful.
In the main though, the 2wd is much more fun, more spritly, feels lighter, maybe all due to an extra 50-70bhp though, never driven a 4x4 with 300/330bhp
PS: Some say that having a 4x4 is publicly annoucing you're gay, so be careful

Ah! this old chestnut and my old reply................................
2wd is for boy racer nut jobs that love going sideways and doing doughnuts
4x4 is for grip off the line and on the twisty bits
and yes we know the MT75 is made out of chocolate but how many of you 2wd boys have shattered diffs, busted props and half shafts? come on own up

4x4 every time. never seen the appeal of being on the edge everytime you drive a 2wd, especially when its a bit cold and slightly moist. you can still get the arse out on a 4x4. and the gearboxes are fine if you dont launch them hard, or at least have some sort of mechanical sympethy

4x4 power
launch a 4x4 against a 2wd and we all know who is off the mark first! for those who dont(4x4) as for reliability, its all dependant on your right foot!
