Mine did this, was just down to a bad connection on the plug.

I got bored though and never bothered to fix it

May just remove it then, some gauges will fit nicely in there.

Check out the connector for the AWS module - I think you'll find it up behind either the passenger or driver's footwell kickplate.

That is easy. Accelerate up to 50mph+ and stand on the brakes. If the boot is not shut, then it'll go through the rear window. Then you'll know to check before you drive off next time.

{sorry, couldn't resist}

Seriously, it is more than likely the AWS connector plug, or less likely, the module itself. Clean it or replace the unit as you see fit.

Mine used to permanently tell me the boot was open - the little switch on the latch was gummed up - cleaned it up and the display stopped lying

you need to use switch cleaner in the connection
the plugs have dried out and soemtimes it's the actual aws unit that needs reviving

on the other hand you may be driving about with half your doors open and a fuel leak

the aws units are in some strange places inside the lower dash on all the cars i've taken them out of, sometimes they are behind one of the kick panels and in the laster cars they are behind the drivers side glovebox and behind the passenger side top cubby hole

you'd need to know exactly where they were before starting to take the dash apart to look for a fix
